Mitchell baseball opens with two wins on West River trip

Apr. 6—RAPID CITY — Offense was in ample supply as the Mitchell High School baseball team got its spring season underway with two wins on Saturday as part of a four-game West River trip.

Mitchell started with a 13-8 win over Rapid City Central before dispatching of Douglas by a 25-1 score in five innings.

The Kernels struck early and often against the Cobblers, scoring nine runs across the first three innings, including five in the second. Leading 9-5 through four innings, Mitchell added four runs in the fifth to keep Central at bay.

Brennen Penne notched two hits, one run batted in and two runs scored, while Parker Mandel was responsible for four RBIs on one hit and two walks. Jaxson Hartman drove in a pair of runs, and Hudson Borgan and Landen Soulek each had one RBI.

Five pitchers split the seven innings of work on the mound, with Penne earning credit for the pitching win after recording four outs in relief. Quinton Wilson also picked up a save.

For Central, Laken Uttecht and Tucker Jones each had two RBIs.

Later, Mitchell posted 10 runs in the second inning and 12 more runs in the fifth to run away with a lopsided victory in its second contest of the afternoon.

Carter McCormick posted three hits, two walks, three RBIs and three runs scored, joined by Gavin Jones, Penne, Michael Gomez and Jacob Ebert as five Kernels who had multiple hits. Overall, totaled 16 hits and 13 walks against Douglas. Ten different players had a hit, and five more reached safely at least once via walk.

Tyler Christensen picked up the pitching win, striking out five batters against three walks, two hits and no earned runs allowed across four innings.

Mitchell (2-0) plays two more games out west on Sunday against Sturgis and Rapid City Stevens.
