Weekend prep roundup: Spring sports snowballing into heart of the season

Apr. 7—MORGANTOWN Baseball Morgantown: MHS had a successful week by going 4-0 with wins over John Marshall, University, Washington, and RCB.The Mohigans only allowed eight runs in four games and improved to 7-3 on the season heading into the most challenging stretch of the 2025 schedule, beginning Monday against Wheeling Park.

MHS finds itself No. 6 in the Class AAAA MetroNews baseball power rankings in week one.

University: UHS has lost its last three games to Linsly, Morgantown, and John Marshall, falling to 4-7 in the campaign. The Hawks will have a tough week ahead with four games against clubs in the top ten of the MetroNews HS baseball week one power rankings.

The Hawks will see John Marshall, Morgantown, Spring Valley, and Hurricane in the next five days.

Preston: PHS won its only game last week with a 9-8 victory over Grafton in extra innings on Wednesday. Bryson McNew hit a solo home run to walk-off for the Knights in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Clay-Battelle: C-B picked up a 10-0 victory over Valley last week to improve to 5-3 on the season. The Cee-Bees will host Madonna on Tuesday and Paden City on Thursday before a matchup with Trinity Christian on Friday at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

Trinity Christian: TCS defeated Paden City 21-5 on Tuesday before splitting a doubleheader on the road with Oak Glen to improve to 6-3.

The Warriors travel to Madonna on Monday night and will host the Blue Dons in the reverse fixture on Wednesday. Then TCS will face county rival Clay-Battelle on Friday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark in the Mon County Classic.

Softball Morgantown: MHS enjoyed a strong week with three solid wins over John Marshall, Linsly, and University. The latter being the first loss of the season for the Mohigans crosstown rival UHS on Friday.

After opening the season 3-5, MHS has won five straight games and is building some crucial momentum. The Mohigans will host Wheeling Park on Tuesday before traveling south to visit Buckhannon-Upshur on Wednesday.

University: UHS did not play after its 6-3 defeat to Morgantown on Friday and will return to action by hosting John Marshall on Monday before visiting Wheeling Park on Wednesday.

The Hawks sit 7-1 on the season.

Boys Lacrosse Morgantown: MHS remained undefeated improving to 6-0 on Saturday afternoon with a 20-7 victory over Martinsburg. Ten Mohigans tallied a goal in the contest led by senior Ayden Shepard with six, to go along with two assists. Luke Quigley added four goals and a pair of assists as well.

MHS will travel for its next game on Tuesday against South Fayette (Pa.) at 7:45 p.m.

University: UHS improved to 6-2 on Saturday with a 15-2 win over Spring Mills. Four Hawks netted hat tricks, with Maxwell Walker, Will Harper, Ethan Garrick, and Nicholas Joseph each scoring three goals. Joseph also won 14 face-offs.

UHS will travel to Wheeling Park on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. start.

Girls Lacrosse Morgantown: MHS sits 4-5 after splitting two games over the weekend with a loss to George Washington 10-7 and a victory over Hedgesville 12-4. MHS will travel to Fairmont Senior on Tuesday.

Tennis Morgantown (G): MHS defeated Wheeling Park 5-2 on Wednesday of last week and followed with a 6-1 victory over Oak Glen on Saturday.
