KHSAA Sweet 16 girls basketball tournament results, highlights from semis at Rupp Arena
LEXINGTON — Kennedy Stamper led a 3-point barrage that sent the George Rogers Clark High School girls basketball team to its first state championship game in 34 years.
Stamper was 7 for 9 from 3-point range and scored 27 points as the Cardinals topped Frederick Douglass 75-52 on Saturday in a semifinal of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.
The No. 2-ranked Cardinals (28-7) hit 9 of 20 3-point attempts and advanced to face the Sacred Heart-Danville Christian winner in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game.
Kyleigh Chestnut (12 points) and Jailenn Green (10 points, four assists) also had big games for GRC, which is in the state final for the first time since falling to Laurel County 33-31 in 1991.
Stamper hit six 3-pointers in the first half, helping the Cardinals build a 41-22 halftime lead.
Eighth grader Tamia Waide had 11 points and four assists to lead No. 12 Frederick Douglass (27-8), which played in the state semifinals for the first time.
The Broncos committed 18 turnovers, leading to 25 GRC points.
