KHSAA Sweet 16 girls basketball tournament results, highlights from quarterfinals at Rupp
LEXINGTON – Robbie Graham put his trust in his players, and Teigh Yeast delivered the biggest moment of the game.
Yeast’s 3-point play with 38.4 seconds left propelled the George Rogers Clark High School girls basketball team to a 50-42 victory over North Laurel in Friday’s quarterfinals of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.
His team leading 43-42, Graham called a timeout with 52.7 seconds left and didn’t tighten the reins on his players.
“We’re always going to be aggressive and take what the defense gives us,” Graham said. “I feel confident in our players attacking the basket. At that moment, it wasn’t a set this or that. It was just, we’re going to play basketball. I trust them in that situation to make plays.”
Yeast got the ball at the top of the key, drove right through the lane and scored at the basket, was fouled, then completed the 3-point play for a 46-42 lead.
“Being aggressive and attacking the rim right there, we knew we needed some points on the board,” said Yeast, a junior guard.
No. 2-ranked George Rogers Clark (27-7) extended its winning streak to 10 and advanced to face the Taylor County-Frederick Douglass winner in Saturday’s 11 a.m. semifinal.
Michigan signee Ciara Byars posted 10 points, six rebounds, three blocks and three steals to lead GRC. Kennedy Stamper also scored 10 points, and Yeast finished with nine points, five rebounds and two assists.
Murray State signee Brooke Nichelson posted 22 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks to lead No. 7 North Laurel (32-3).
The Jaguars finished 1 for 11 from 3-point range, including a 1-for-5 clip from Nichelson.
“When we started missing shots and our 3s weren’t falling, it started getting in our heads a little bit,” Nichelson said. “We knew we had to break down our offense and score in the half-court, and the shots just weren’t falling for us.”
Nichelson’s basket with 1:39 left pulled the Jaguars within 43-42, but she missed a free throw that could have tied it. The teams then traded missed shots before Yeast’s 3-point play sparked the Cardinals’ 7-0 game-ending run.
“It was a tough, grind-out game,” Graham said. “We didn’t have our best at times throughout the course of the game, but we stayed together, played together, and fought through some adversity.”
