Apr. 4—MITCHELL — The Mitchell High School softball team has been most impacted by a wet week of weather as the Kernels attempted to start their season.
The season is slated to begin against Sioux Falls Jefferson on Friday, April 4 with a 5 p.m. game at the Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls. That game was moved up to earlier on Friday evening.
Mitchell's latest attempt for a home opener on Saturday against Sioux Falls Lincoln was moved to Sioux Falls rather than at the Cadwell Sports Complex, due to unplayable field conditions. Mitchell will now play at 3 p.m. Saturday on artificial turf against the Patriots at Field 7 at the Sanford Sports Complex, with the JV game taking place at 1:30 p.m.
The Kernel softball program has had four weather-impacted matchups this week. Mitchell had an April 3 road game at Brookings postponed, with no makeup date announced. The initial opening game set for April 1 against Watertown has been postponed to April 14 in Mitchell. The new MHS home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, hosting Pierre at 5:30 p.m.
Also impacted on Friday by the weather was MHS boys tennis, which was slated to play its season opener Friday at Yankton. The Kernels will now face the Bucks on Monday, April 7.
