Joplin soccer falls to Kickapoo

Joplin girls soccer ran into a juggernaut in the Kickapoo Chiefs and fell 8-0 in a point differential-shortened match Thursday at Joplin High School.

It was the seventh shutout of the season for Kickapoo (8-1). It has given up just two goals so far this season.

Chiefs senior forward Elli Davison recorded a hat trick in the first 13 1/2 minutes and finished the first period with five goals.

Davison's first goal came 1:01 into the match with a short punch in from the right side that got past Joplin keeper Kadence Lawson.

Her second score came three minutes later when she found the back of the net with another goal from the right side at the 35:54 mark.

She completed the hat trick and then added another score in the first period.

Kickapoo junior forward Aven Martin got in on the scoring when she punched one in from the right side off a Davison assist with 19:48 left and put the Chiefs ahead 5-0.

Martin struck again about a minute later with her second goal to give the Chiefs a 6-0 lead.

Kickapoo senior Erin Lee gave the Chiefs a 7-0 lead when she scored on a penalty kick, and Davison snagged her fifth and final score when she went one-on-one with Eagle reserve keeper Kaydence Haaland-Sapp at the 1:36 mark. That goal gave Kickapoo an 8-0 lead and triggered the rule.

Joplin head coach Desmond Williams put the Eagle loss in perspective after the match.

"Kickapoo is a phenomenal program," Williams said. "I told the girls tonight that I really don't care what the scoreline is as long as they put in the effort, and they showed a lot of effort tonight."

Joplin (3-4) will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to Ozark (6-3) for a match Tuesday.
