GREENVILLE — Riverheads edged Waynesboro 2-1 in Shenandoah District girls soccer Thursday. It was the first time in program history that the Gladiators beat the Little Giants.
Seniors Ella Arehart and Cate Schooley scored the Riverheads goals. Goalie Mackenzie Roller recorded 20 saves in the victory.
"They have been the underdogs for many years," said Riverheads coach Rachel Prater. "So I am really proud of them for how they are progressing this season and earning their rank in the district."
Riverheads (4-1, 2-1 Shenandoah) is at Rocktown for a nondistrict match Monday. Waynesboro (4-2-1, 1-1-1 Shenandoah) hosts Staunton Tuesday.
Cougars softball tops Bison
STUARTS DRAFT — Sierra Whetsel and Adyson Coyner had two RBIs apiece and Karlee Layne pitched a complete-game victory as Stuarts Draft beat Buffalo Gap 8-2 in Shenandoah District softball Thursday.
After giving up a run in the first inning, Draft rallied for three runs in the second to take a lead it would not give up. The Cougars added two more runs in both the third and fourth innings to go in front 7-1.
Layne gave up two earned runs and struck out eight Bison in the win. Madison Miller added three hits for Draft.
Bailey Tribble was 2-for-4 with a home run for Buffalo Gap, knocking in both runs in the loss, the third in a row for the Bison.
After a tough nondistrict start to the season, Stuarts Draft (4-4, 4-0 Shenandoah) has now won four games in a row, all in the district. The Cougars are at Fort Defiance Tuesday. Buffalo Gap (4-3, 1-2 Shenandoah) hosts Wilson Memorial Tuesday.
Wednesday tennis wrap-up
Fort Defiance beat Broadway 7-2 Wednesday in girls tennis. The Indians got singles wins from Addyson Mooney, Camila Armendariz Cruz, Savanna Monger and Maecy Frizzelle. Fort also swept the doubles matches.
Wilson Memorial beat Turner Ashby 8-1 in girls tennis Wednesday. Brynlee Roach, Alison Troxell, Gabriella Babral, Iris Chan and Caroline Solomon all won singles matches for the Hornets, who swept the double matches.
