Jameis Winston visiting Giants Tuesday as desperate team searches for QB
Saquon Barkley might have called it.
Jameis Winston asked the Eagles’ All-Pro running back who was going to sign the free agent quarterback at the Super Bowl in February.
“I think New York needs a quarterback right now,” Barkley said, indicating he meant his former Giants team.
Now Winston, 31, is visiting the Giants on Tuesday, per NFL Network, with a chance to sign in the Big Apple.
“Would I really sign with the Giants? Absolutely!” Winston told NJ Advance Media in New Orleans. “I want to keep playing and do what I do best.”
The Giants’ search for a quarterback has felt interminable. They tried to trade for Matthew Stafford and pay him, but he decided to stay with the Rams instead.
They now want Aaron Rodgers, but sources have told the Daily News that Rodgers to the Giants seems unlikely as he deliberates on the Vikings, Steelers, Giants or retirement — although with Rodgers, no one ever truly knows for sure.
So the Giants hosted Joe Flacco and Russell Wilson on free agent visits last Thursday and Friday, respectively. And now they’re bringing in Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Winston, an 11th year vet here in 2025, is a high-risk, high-reward player.
He threw 13 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions with a 2-5 record as the Browns’ starter last season once Deshaun Watson tore his ACL.
He has a magnetic personality, works hard and probably wouldn’t cost much in free agency. So he might be a sensible Giants fit as an affordable Week 1 starter who would readily take a step back to the bench when a rookie NFL Draft pick is ready.
The only thing is this was obviously not the Giants’ first or second or third (or fourth?) choice.
Their pursuit of Stafford was the behavior of a team that was not counting on a franchise-changing quarterback to be available in the draft. Would signing Winston make it more likely that they would now use their No. 3 pick on a passer?
At least Winston would be entertaining if he came to New York.
He worked for FOX as a personality all of Super Bowl week in New Orleans. And when he was asked for his thoughts on the Giants’ roster and Brian Daboll, he might have slipped when he referred to the Giants as “we.”
“I have a ton of respect for coach Brian Daboll, the things he does offensively,” Winston told NJ Advance Media. “I think we have a young— woah! They have a young roster. But they have a young roster that’s ready to win. They’re ready to bounce back. I know they’re hungry over there.”
