Jaguars only team in NFL to accomplish this in free agency
Now, two weeks into the NFL's free agency period, the Jacksonville Jaguars are the only remaining team who hasn't re-signed one of their own unrestricted free agents, according to Travis Holmes of Big Cat Country.
The Jaguars did re-sign offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, but he was a restricted free agent.
Despite not re-signing one of their own unrestricted free agents, the Jaguars have been quite busy under new GM James Gladstone, who has quickly gone about reshaping this roster.
Prior to free agency starting, Gladstone would trade Christian Kirk to the Houston Texans, and he also released Evan Engram, along with three other players to free up additional salary cap space.
Gladstone then put that cap space to work, signing nine players on the first day of the NFL's legal tampering period. A week later, he then added his 10th outside free agent addition by bringing on offensive tackle Fred Johnson.
Positionally, Gladstone went heavy along the offensive line, in the secondary and at tight end with multiple additions at each. He also added to the receiver and quarterback rooms as well.
His goal, as he put it during a recent press conference, was to use free agency as a tool to raise the floor of the roster.
"What we were seeking to do in pro free agency was to raise the floor of this football team and every player that we pursued and that we've now acquired is meeting that standard," Gladstone said.
"And by being nothing more than who they are and who we know them to be, both on and off the field, they're going to do exactly what we had hoped they do. And that's level up this ecosystem."
While there are cornerstone players on the Jaguars roster on both sides of the ball, the overall construction of this group needed improvement and also players who fit the new offensive and defensive schemes.
With 10 picks in this year's draft, the Jaguars still have plenty of opportunity ahead to further add some impact players to this team.
