NFL analyst says Commanders' most improved team after free agency
The Washington Commanders may not have been the most active team in free agency, but they made big moves that could make a 12-5 team even better in 2025.
Washington general manager Adam Peters didn't blow his budget in free agency, refusing to pay top dollar for a class most considered weak. Instead, Peters used the trade market to fill two of the Commanders' most significant needs. First, he sent a fifth-round pick to the 49ers for Deebo Samuel and shocked the NFL by sending multiple picks to the Texans for five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Even better for Peters, he did it without giving up his first or second-round picks in the 2025 NFL draft.
By trading for Tunsil, Washington can move last season's left tackle, Brandon Coleman, to the right side. That allows right tackle Andrew Wylie to kick inside to guard, taking Sam Cosmi's place until he returns from injury. So, considering that move, you must consider how it improved the entire unit.
Peters has also made some moves on defense. While Washington released Jonathan Allen, it signed multiple defensive linemen to improve the run defense.
So, how much have the Commanders improved? ESPN's Field Yates believes Washington is the NFL's most improved through two weeks of free agency.
The Washington Commanders. There are certain instances in which quality over quantity matters to me in free agency, and Washington would fit that criteria in this instance. Acquiring left tackle Laremy Tunsil solidifies a premium spot in front of Jayden Daniels, while a small-cost trade for receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. provides a boost as well. Washington should feel emboldened to make moves now following what was maybe the best rookie quarterback season ever.
The Commanders have a chance to improve further in next month's NFL draft, where many believe they'll target an edge rusher and more offensive firepower. It's quite possible the Commanders will be better in 2025 but don't quite match their 12 wins from last season.
