How much money did Jaguars spend in free agency and where do they rank?
Where do the Jacksonville Jaguars rank in spending during the first two weeks of NFL free agency?
Right away, we saw GM James Gladstone begin overhauling this Jaguars roster. Along with trading Christian Kirk and releasing Evan Engram, along with three others, before free agency began, Gladstone made nine signings on the first day of the NFL's legal tampering period.
In total, Gladstone has made 10 outside additions, and he hasn't re-signed any of the Jaguars' own unrestricted free agents.
Jaguars free agent signings
- WR Dyami Brown
- T/G Chuma Edoga
- C Robert Hainsey
- CB Jourdan Lewis
- RG Patrick Mekari
- QB Nick Mullens
- TE Johnny Mundt
- S Eric Murray
- TE Hunter Long
- OT Fred Johnson
In total, the Jaguars spent $141.17 million in free agency, according to Over the Cap. Compared to the rest of the NFL, this ranks as the 14th most.
In terms of guaranteed dollars, the Jaguars spent $88.455 million, which also ranks 14th. Lastly, by average annual value, the Jaguars $5.817 million per year on their new contracts ranks 15th.
The biggest individual deals belong to Jourdan Lewis, Eric Murray, and Patrick Mekari.
Lewis signed a three-year deal worth $30 million, including $20 million guaranteed. Murray signed a three-year deal worth $22.5 million with $12 million guaranteed. And Mekari also signed a three-year contract worth $37.5 million and has $22.5 million guaranteed.
While in the past, we've seen the Jaguars go out and spend quite a bit in free agency, this year's approach has a different feel, even though Jacksonville made 10 additions and rank in the top half of the NFL in spending.
Gladstone managed to maintain salary cap flexibility this season, with the Jaguars still ranking 10th in available cap space, and it's not as if any of these contracts are going to hurt the Jaguars long-term cap-wise. These are shorter, two or three-year deals with Jacksonville having an out after one or two years if that's how things play out.
