I'm not sure how likely it is that this will happen, but the potential No. 1 overall pick in this year's NFL draft fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a recent mock draft.
Geoff Schwartz of FOX Sports put together his latest first-round projection, and still on the board when the Jaguars were on the clock at fifth overall was Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter.
In order for Carter to get to pick No. 5, it took two quarterbacks being taken, the New York Giants choosing Travis Hunter, and the Patriots prioritizing positional need by taking offensive lineman Will Campbell.
"The Jaguars will grab the player that sits atop many big boards with the fifth pick," wrote Schwartz. "Carter is a ready-made pass rusher with a high motor and excellent use of his hands, which translates to early NFL success. The Jaguars ranked 28th in sacks last year, and Carter immediately upgrades the defense."
Carter's 66 pressures last season were the second-most among defensive ends, according to PFF, and his 13 sacks were tied for the fifth-most. He also ranked fourth among his position group in win rate, and he graded out well against the run as well.
If things were to play out this way, I imagine that it would take the Jaguars less than a second to know who they were going to select. However, while it's fun to imagine this scenario taking place, I don't consider it a likely one.
In fact, it was reported recently that Carter is only visiting with the top four teams in this year's draft because he doesn't anticipate going later than that.
