Husker baseball surrenders seven unanswered to drop an 11-9 defeat to Omaha

Nebraska (12-17) visited Omaha (9-17) Wednesday night for a midweek single-game battle. After surrendering seven unanswered runs, the Huskers fell 11-9 for their second-straight loss to an in-state foe.

The Mavericks initially held a 2-0 advantage in the first, before Nebraska took a 4-2 lead by the third. Omaha tied the game at 4-4 before the Huskers scored five straight in the fourth to go up 9-4.

The wheels fell for Nebraska from there with the Mavericks racking up seven runs across the next three innings. The Huskers held opportunities to score, but ending the eighth with the bases loaded summed up their second-half struggles.

Nebraska totaled 16 hits for nine RBIs and left 14 runners on base. Omaha only produced eight hits for 11 RBIs, which included a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh.

The Huskers suffered costly mistakes from all over. The Mavericks scored their first two runs off hit-by-pitches, got another run off a walk and even brought in a runner following a sacrificial fly that flew foul.

Max Buettenback led Nebraska in RBIs, earning five after going 3-for-4 on the night, which included a three-run home run. Case Sanderson finished 4-for-6 at the plate, hitting a double and one RBI.

Cayden Brumbaugh hit 2-for-5, both doubles, for one RBI and two runs. Dylan Carey delivered two hits for an RBI. Cael Frost brought in the Huskers' final RBI in the fourth off his lone hit of the game.

Nebraska put eight pitchers on the mound in the loss but combined for nine total strikeouts while allowing 12 walks.

The Huskers return to Lincoln on Friday, welcoming in Rutgers for a three-game conference series. Game one is set for 6 p.m. on Nebraska Public Media.
