Apr. 11—MITCHELL — With a strong display of consistency on Friday afternoon, the Hanson boys golf team picked up hardware to begin the season.
The Beavers claimed the Class B Classic team championship at Lakeview Golf Course, firing a cumulative score of 227, besting both Wall and Sully Buttes by six strokes. The Eagles and the Chargers both shot 233, but Wall placed second due to a third-score tiebreaker.
Leading the charge for Hanson was Ben Wilber, who bounced back following a bogey and a double-bogey in his first three holes to shoot 3-over 74 against Lakeview's par-71 layout, which included three birdies on his front nine. Wilber finished in fourth place individually, one spot ahead of teammate Will Jarding, who shot a 4-over 75 en route to a fifth-place finish. AJ Wilber placed in 12th following a 7-over 78 for the Beavers.
Sully Buttes' Gavin Colson claimed the medalist honors on the boys side after an ever-par round of 71, finishing one stroke ahead of Doland's Kaiden Weinreis and Flandreau Indian's Kaden Burshiem. Wessington Springs' JD Thompson ended the tournament in 13th place after a 7-over 78, as medals were awarded to golfers who finished inside the top-15.
On the girls side, Clark/Willow Lake's Brynn Roehrich was the lone golfer in the field to break 80 en route to the win, firing a 6-over 77 with 13 pars on her card. Chester's Jaden McDonald finished in second with an 86 followed by Philip's Addy Miller in third, also shooting an 86.
Platte-Geddes' Mallory Gant was the top Mitchell-area finisher, shooting a 95 en route to coming in 10th. McCook Central/Montrose's Maddy Lauck finished in 11th after a round of 96 and Burke's Olivia Bull was 13th following a 98.
Miller's round of 86 propelled the Scotties to the girls team championship with a cumulative score of 285 to best Dell Rapids St. Mary by eight strokes. Chester (305) came in third and MCM posted a team score of 318 en route to a fourth-place finish.
