Apr. 11—MITCHELL — The comforts of home were good to Mitchell High School boys tennis on Friday afternoon, as the Kernels won 8-1 over Rapid City Central in the team's first home dual of the season at Hitchcock Park.
Cooper Star, Asher Dannenbring, Sutton Thompson and Dawson Adams were all double winners for MHS on Friday, claiming singles and doubles victories on the afternoon. Star and Thompson each did not yield a game in two matches, winning 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches, respectively, and by the same score at No. 2 doubles as teammates. Adams was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 5 singles and Dannenbring won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Luke Jerke won the longest singles match of the day, a 6-4, 6-4 win for the Kernels over Peyton Taylor at Flight 2. The Cobblers' only win of the day came at No. 1 singles, with Anson Griffin winning 6-0, 6-2 over Matthew Mauszycki in their singles matchup.
In doubles play, Jerke and Mauszycki won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles over Griffin and Greysun Weston. Dannenbring and Adams also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles to close out the two-man sweeps for the Kernels.
It was the first Kernel victory for head coach Tyler McEntee, who is in his first year leading the program. MHS lost 5-4 to Yankton and 5-3 to Brandon Valley on April 7 in Yankton in its first two team contests of the 2025 campaign.
The Kernels are back in action on Tuesday, April 15 at Brookings for a triangular with the host Bobcats and Aberdeen Roncalli. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
