Greece vs Scotland LIVE: Result and reaction from Nations League relegation play-off first leg
Scotland survived an onslaught from Greece in Athens as Scott McTominay’s first-half penalty proved enough to take a one-goal lead back to Hampden in their Nations League relegation play-off.
A contentious penalty call went Scotland’s way and McTomimay picked himself up after colliding into Lazaros Rota in the box to calmly dispatch the spot-kick. Scotland deserved their lead at the break and could have doubled their lead, with Che Adams twice going close.
Greece dominated after the restart and the introduction of 17-year-old winger Konstantinos Karetsas led to waves of pressure. The teenager set up Christos Tzolis with an excellent cross but the forward hit the post from two yards as Scotland looked to hang on to their lead.
And Scotland survived another scare as Greece were awarded a late penalty, only for VAR to come to the rescue and overturn the decision as Grant Hanley was outside the box when he fouled.
Only England, Spain and Netherlands had won in Greece in the last two years, but Scotland join the list and take the advantage back to Glasgow as they look to maintain their top-tier status in the Nations League in the second leg on Sunday.

Scotland survive Greece onslaught to earn slender lead in Nations League play-off
22:14 , Jamie BraidwoodScott McTominay scored the only goal of the game as Scotland survived a second-half barrage from Greece in their Nations League play-off in Athens.
The Napoli midfielder netted a penalty he had won in the 33rd minute of the first leg and the Scots spurned a couple of other chances before the break.
An impressive performance began to flounder in the second half when 17-year-old Genk-born attacker Konstantinos Karetsas came on to make his debut for the home side, after making the switch from Belgium, for whom he had played at various youth levels.
Steve Clarke’s side withstood relentless pressure from the Greeks who hit the woodwork, although keeper Craig Gordon was not called upon to make too many saves.
Scotland survive Greece onslaught to earn slender lead in Nations League play-off
Scotland weather Greece pressure to win in Athens
21:54Greece peppered the Scotland box.
In the 68th minute, from an inviting Karetsas cross, Tzolis hit a post from six yards under pressure from Scotland defender Ralston before his deflected drive skipped past the far post for a corner, which was defended again on the stretch.
Hanley tripped substitute Fountas on the edge of the box and referee Stieler pointed to the spot then changed his mind to a free-kick just outside, with the set-piece coming to nothing.
There was time for substitute Pavidis to head over from close range as the tie moves to Glasgow still poised but in Scotland's favour.
FULL TIME! Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:47 , Jamie BraidwoodGreece had 24 shots tonight but just one on target. Craig Gordon did not have much to do but Greece did hit the post. There were a few scares.
FULL TIME! Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:45 , Jamie BraidwoodSteve Clarke has built a resilient team - you cannot argue with that. Scotland join England, Spain and the Netherlands as the only teams to win in Greece in the past two years.
Scotland have now also won three matches in a row, beating Croatia, Poland and now Greece. Those are three decent teams.
FULL TIME! Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:43 , Jamie BraidwoodWOW! How on earth have Scotland held on to win that?! It was all Greece in the second half (one-sided does not come close to it).
But Souttar and Hanley and the rest of the Scotland defence was excellent. Greece do not lose at home very often but Scotland will take a lead back to Hampden for Sunday’s second leg!
FULL TIME! Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:40 , Jamie Braidwood90+7 mins: IT’S OVER! Robertson clears the cross and the final Greece shot of the night sails over the bar!
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:39 , Jamie Braidwood90+6 mins: Substitute Porteous fouls Tsimikas and Greece will have a late, late free-kick out wide.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:39 , Jamie Braidwood90+5 mins: The five minutes are up...
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:37 , Jamie Braidwood90+4 mins: Tierney hoofs clear. Max Johnstone replaces Gilmour for the final minute.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:37 , Jamie Braidwood90+3 mins: A Greece attack breaks down and Gordon lies on top of the ball.
To be honest, Greece’s best pressure came in the first 10 to 15 minutes of the half. They’ve not been as sharp since then.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:35 , Jamie Braidwood90+1 mins: Greece can do that all day. Zafeiris shoots from range but fires over.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:34 , Jamie Braidwood90 mins: FIVE minutes is the answer.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:33 , Jamie Braidwood90 mins: Karetsas has been excellent since coming on but thankfully for Scotland his attempt from range is awful. Well wide.
Scotland will now pray for a generous amount of added time.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:32 , Jamie Braidwood89 mins; CHANCE! Karetsas finds Pavlidis but he heads over from two yards! Gordon would have been beaten there but Pavlidis can’t keep it down.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:31 , Jamie Braidwood87 mins: Pelkas, who has taken the armband, puts the free-kick into the wall!
NO PENALTY! Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:29 , Jamie Braidwood85 mins: It was outside! The decision has been changed to a free-kick! Scotland survive another one!
Still, a chance for Tsimikas.
PENALTY! Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:27 , Jamie BraidwoodNOW IT’S GREECE WHO HAVE A PENALTY!
But will this be overturned! Hanley is outside the box when he makes his challenge!
The VAR check is underway.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:24 , Jamie Braidwood80 mins: Tsimikas finds Ioannidis with a cross from open play but the header is straight at Gordon, who really hasn’t been worked as much as Greece would have liked given their dominance in this second half.
It’s the striker’s last involvement and he is replaced by Fountas.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:22 , Jamie Braidwood79 mins: Scotland survive another couple of corners. Gordon then gets a grasp on the ball.
The Tartan Army find their voice.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:21 , Jamie Braidwood77 mins: Robertson heads wide at the back post. This would be an incredible effort they hang on here.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:19 , Jamie Braidwood75 mins: Kieran Tierney is back in blue. The full-back makes his first Scotland appearance since his injury against Switzerland at Euro 2024.
George Hirst is also on for his debut. He replaces Adams and Tierney replaces McLean. He will double up with Robertson on the left wing.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:17 , Jamie Braidwood72 mins: A triple change for Greece, with Tzolis one of those coming off. Pavlidis, Zafeiris , and Pelkas are on .
Steve Clarke has yet to turn to his bench.
Oh, hang on, they are coming now.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:11 , Jamie Braidwood68 mins: OFF THE POST! Scotland survive a big scare. Karetsas sweeps a cross into the box and finds Tzolis at the back post, but he hits the frame of the goal from two yards out! Greece go again and Tzolis’ shot is deflected wide off Hanley, but that could have gone anywhere.
Scotland are really riding their luck.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:08 , Jamie Braidwood66 mins: Nice play from Gilmour to set up McGinn. He sees the goal from 30 yards out and tries his luck, but can’t keep his effort down.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:07 , Jamie Braidwood65 mins; A rare attack for Scotland. McTominay looks for Robertson’s run into the box but the Greece full-back Rota recovers. His clearance actually rebounds off Robertson and lands back at goalkeeper Tzolakis.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:05 , Jamie Braidwood61 mins: Some time on the ball for Scotland at last. McGinn holds up the ball well and gets Scotland into the Greece half for the first time since the restart.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:03 , Jamie Braidwood59 mins: Scotland have everyone behind the ball. It’s surely too deep for this stage of the match. McTominay blocks a shot from Tzolis and from the corner, Mavropanos heads wide.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
21:00 , Jamie Braidwood55 mins: This could be a long half for Scotland if Greece keep this up. Suddenly everything is going through the teenager Karetsas. He sizes up Robertson but bends a left-footed shot over the bar.
Then Tzolis cuts in from the left and shoots wide. Scotland need to put a foot on it.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:57 , Jamie Braidwood53 mins: Another dangerous attack from Greece, who have started really well in this second half. Hanley clears and then Koulierakis rolls a pass out of play.
Scotland try to slow things down as Gordon takes the goalkick.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:56 , Jamie Braidwood52 mins: Greece are laying on a siege! Gordon punches Tsimikas’ corner this time, and Scotland throw bodies in front of the shots, with the youngster Karetsas again trying his luck. Scotland hang on.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:55 , Jamie Braidwood50 mins: Wicked ball in from Tsimikas and McTominay rises well at the front post. McGinn heads away at the back host.
Tsimikas delivers another stunning ball in... and this time they do make contact. The header from Mavropanos loops towards the back post and goes behind. Greece try to play on and end up putting it in, but it had gone out of play.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:53 , Jamie Braidwood48 mins: Excellent covering from Ralston after Gilmour loses a pass looking for McLean, sweeping up on the edge of the box.
Greece are raising it and Karetsas goes for a scissor kick that is whacked away by Hanley. Greece have their first corner.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:52 , Jamie Braidwood47 mins: Karetsas’ first involvement is to overhit a cross out of play. Ralston was left in a heap on the touchline after Tsimikas leaned into him.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:49 , Jamie Braidwood46 mins: Back underway in Athens. The hosts have made one change, with 17-year-old Karetsas replacing Masouras.
Karetsas is making his debut and is very fresh-faced indeed.
HALF TIME! Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:47 , Jamie BraidwoodThe return leg is on Sunday at 5pm. Can Scotland take a lead back to Hampden for the second leg?
HALF TIME! Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:40 , Jamie BraidwoodThese are the half-time scores in the Nations League quarter-finals. From a Scotland point of view, they will play the loser of Denmark v Portugal in World Cup qualifying. That’s currently goalless.
- Croatia 2-0 France
- Denmark 0-0 Portugal
- Italy 1-0 Germany
- Netherlands 1-1 Spain
HALF TIME! Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:36 , Jamie BraidwoodScotland lead thanks to McTominay’s penalty. It was a very soft one, but the visitors take the gift. There is an argument McTominay commits the foul rather the other way around.
Craig Gordon has yet to have a save to make and the midfield of Gilmour and McLean, with McGinn, Ferguson and McTominay supporting Adams, has worked nicely.
HALF TIME! Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:34 , Jamie BraidwoodTsimikas can’t trouble Gordon with the free-kick, curling over and rippling the top of the net.
And that’s it! Scotland lead at the break and they’ve been very good indeed.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:33 , Jamie Braidwood45+2 mins: We’re into two minutes of added time and Ferguson concedes a foul on the edge of the box. He is booked but immediately appeals - he’s right to be aggrieved as Rota made the most of very little contract.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:32 , Jamie Braidwood45 mins: WIDE! Oooooh so close from Adams! It’s brilliant from McGinn, spinning through contact on the edge of the box and finding Adams. The striker takes it early, and confidently, striking it well across goal; but it whistles wide.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:30 , Jamie Braidwood43 mins; CHANCE! Scotland should be two up! The goalkeeper Tzolakis makes a horror of a clearance and passes straight to Gilmour, who quickly finds Adams. The striker is in the box with the keeper off his line, but shoots too quickly and finds the recovering Tzolakis!
Could Adams have found McTominay or taken it further into the box? Let off for Greece.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:28 , Jamie Braidwood42 mins: More Greece appeals! The captain Mantalos steps across Ferguson and then goes down right on the edge of the box! He was looking for it.
Then, down the other end, Scotland break - Gilmour is played in by Gilmour but the ball gets stuck under his feet. Tsimikas nudges his back and Mavropanos slides in, as Gilmour slices wide.
This won’t be given, either.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:27 , Jamie Braidwood40 mins; Greece have upped their urgency a bit before half-time. Masouras lines up the shot from the edge of the box but blasts well wide. Scotland have lost it in midfield a couple of times in the last five minutes or so.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:25 , Jamie Braidwood39 mins: Chance! Decent moment for Greece. A clipped cross finds Ioannidis in space on the penalty spot but he heads over the bar. He’d worked about a yard of space from Souttar but got too much on it.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:23 , Jamie Braidwood37 mins: McLean is fortunate to get away with catching Tzolis. It was just outside the box but the Greece fans were roaring for a penalty - they feel hard done by after Scotland received a penalty at the other end.
Greece 0-1 Scotland
20:22 , Jamie Braidwood36 mins: You can’t say Scotland don’t deserve it. It’s been a professional job from Clarke’s men so far.
Ferguson, who has made a good impact on his return, gets a talking to from the referee after catching goalkeeper Tzolakis when he had the ball in his grasp.
GOAL! Greece 0-1 Scotland (McTOMINAY PEN 33')
20:19 , Jamie BraidwoodTHERE’S A LASER IN HIS EYES BUT MCTOMINAY DOES NOT BLINK! SCOTLAND LEAD!
Scotland lead with their first shot on target and it’s THAT MAN AGAIN. McTominay scores his 12th Scotland goal, sending Tzolakis the wrong way with a cool penalty to the right of goal. Super stuff from the Napoli man and he jumps for joy in the corner.
PENALTY! Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:18 , Jamie Braidwood32 mins: This is a strange one! McTominay runs into the box but then crashes into Rota - it’s kind of a 50/50, with McTominay making as much contact as the other way around.
BUT IT STANDS AND SCOTLAND DO HAVE A PENALTY KICK!
PENALTY! Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:17 , Jamie BraidwoodMcTOMINAY GOES DOWN IN THE BOX AND THE REFEREE POINTS TO THE SPOT!
But has McTominay not fouled the Greece defender?
Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:16 , Jamie Braidwood29 mins: Suddenly Greece have room to fly forward! There’s danger as Tzolis cuts inside and works a yard of space, but Scotland manage to get a block in and Hanley does enough to divert it wide. Ferguson sees it out for a goal-kick.
Despite the lack of shots on target, it’s a fairly open, attacking game.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:14 , Jamie Braidwood27 mins: Close! Better ball in from Robertson and it almost breaks to McTominay. There’s a right scramble in the six yard box and McTominay flicks a leg at the loose ball, poking just wide! I don’t think it could have counted though as the referee blew for a foul in the scramble.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:12 , Jamie Braidwood26 mins: Almost an excellent counter from Scotland! They work they ball wonderfully through midfield as Gilmour finds Adams down the right. McTominay gallops into the box but Adams’ cross is cut out by Mavropanos.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:10 , Jamie Braidwood24 mins: Decent build-up play from Greece to work the ball into the box but Ralston throws himself at the block. The right back has started well.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:08 , Jamie Braidwood22 mins: A second Scotland corner but this one has the same result from Robertson: Tzolakis collects again and that too is a waste.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:06 , Jamie Braidwood20 mins: We’ve yet to have a shot on goal from either team but Scotland can be happy enough with their start in Athens. With the number of midfielders in the team, they’ve enjoyed some control: a lack of cutting edge and width in attack is an obvious issue, though.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:04 , Jamie Braidwood17 mins: Half an opening for Scotland: Ferguson makes an excellent diagonal run and Gilmour picks out the pass. Ferguson reaches it before goalkeeper Tzolakis, who comes off his line, but Ferguson’s touch takes him wide.
He settles for the corner but Robertson's delivery is a disappointing one. Tzolakis collects.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
20:01 , Jamie Braidwood15 mins: Scotland face some pressure for the first time. Masouras crosses to the back post and Ralston has to make an excellent defensive header facing his own goal. McGinn races back and slides in on Tsimikas. It was a risky challenge in the box but he wins the ball and Scotland escape.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
19:58 , Jamie Braidwood12 mins: It’s been a good start from Scotland. Robertson lines up a trademark cross, which is cut out by Mavropanos at the front post. Adams had to be making the run across the front.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
19:57 , Jamie Braidwood11 mins: Ooof! A crunching challenged from Ferguson in midfield, but he won the ball from Konstantelias. A ball towards Adams then runs towards the goalkeeper Tzolakis.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
19:55 , Jamie Braidwood9 mins: A lifted pass through to Ioannidis is brought down by the striker in the box, but Souttar recovers to get goal-side and force Ioannidis into running the ball out of play.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
19:52 , Jamie Braidwood6 mins: Robertson sweeps up well after a long ball through to Konstantelias. Gordon clears and then Greece are caught offside.
Gilmour’s pass looking for Adams is overhit.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
19:50 , Jamie Braidwood4 mins: A few whistles from the home fans as Scotland enjoy a spell of possession, with Gilmour seeing plenty of the ball. McLean is caught and now it’s Greece’s turn.
Greece 0-0 Scotland
19:48 , Jamie Braidwood2 mins: Another free-kick for Scotland after McTominay is fouled. It breaks to McGinn on the edge but there’s a foul from Souttar.
KICK-OFF! Greece 0-0 Scotland
19:46 , Jamie BraidwoodUnderway! Greece are playing in white and Scotland are in blue. Robertson sends an early free-kick long.
Greece vs Scotland
19:45 , Jamie BraidwoodHere we go! Cracking atmosphere in Athens and Scotland face a tough test against Greece tonight.
Kick-off follows the national anthems.
How can I watch Greece vs Scotland?
19:40 , Jamie BraidwoodScotland’s play-off against Greece will be shown on free-to-air, as will all matches until the 2026 World Cup, after the previous agreement with ViaPlay came to a premature end and left fans watching games on YouTube.
It will be shown live on BBC One Scotland and BBC iPlayer.
Steve Clarke on Scotland's line-up
19:34 , Jamie BraidwoodSteve Clarke, speaking to the BBC, on his line-up and why he stayed with the back four despite Kieran Tierney’s return from injury.
“I was tempted to go to a back five but decided to stick with the four. There was a couple of things behind it. The four, over the group phase, was good, we created a bit more and had more midfielders on the pitch.
“The other thing was, it was quite a quick start [playing on Thursday]. The only time I had with the players was Wednesday before we flew. We stuck with what we worked with over the previous six games.”
Greece team news
19:26 , Jamie BraidwoodGreece XI: Tzolakis, Rota, Mavropanos, Koulierakis, Tsimikas,Siopis, Mantalos, Masouras, Konstantelias, Tzolis, Ioannidis.
Some familiar names in the Greece line-up, including Liverpool left back Kostas Tsimikas and West Ham centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Scotland hand first call up to 18-year-old with ‘big, big future’
19:16 , Jamie BraidwoodLennon Miller could also win his first Scotland cap tonight, following a breakthrough season from the 18-year-old Motherwell midfielder who has captained his club this season.
“He plays with maturity beyond his years,” said Steve Clarke “He captains his club, which is a big thing at such a young age. Good qualities, can play deep in midfield, can play higher in midfield. Good delivery, box to box, good energy.
"I'm sure he's got a big, big future in front of him. It's our job to look after him and try and bring him along. Hopefully this will be the start of it.”
Steve Clarke on what George Hirst can bring to Scotland: 'A target'
19:05 , Jamie BraidwoodGeorge Hirst is a new face in the Scotland squad and could make his debut tonight. The 26-year-old Ipswich striker has been likened to Lyndon Dykes, who misses out through injury.
"He's a target player,” said Clarke. “We've always tried to have that type of forward player because we feel we've got goals in the midfield.
"I pray that George can help us to maybe score a few more goals."
Steve Clarke wants Scotland to embrace Athens atmosphere
18:53 , Jamie BraidwoodSteve Clarke believes Scotland can build on their victory over Poland in Warsaw as they face Greece away from home in tonight’s first leg.
"You've got to come here and enjoy this type of occasion, this type of atmosphere. We're used to it. We've played against good teams away from home before.
"Recently we've had a couple of good results away from home. Hopefully we can get another one here. It's always good for the players to play in a strong atmosphere, to enjoy it."
Scotland team news: Lots of midfielders
18:44 , Jamie BraidwoodSteve Clarke sticks with the back four despite Kieran Tierney’s return, with Andy Robertson continuing at left back and Grant Hanley and John Souttar the centre-back pair. Anthony Ralston starts at right back.
The midfield is familiar with Napoli’s Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay joining Clarke favourite Kenny McLean.
There’s a welcome return for Lewis Ferguson, who plays with John McGinn behind lone striker Che Adams. Craig Gordon, 42, continues in goal.
There’s not of a lot of width in the team with Ben Doak’s absence being felt.

Greece's impressive campaign
18:25 , Jamie BraidwoodGreece are seeking promotion to League A after winning five of their six group matches in League B, including a victory over England at Wembley.
England responded with their own win in Athens - but Greece’s only other defeats in the past two years have been against France, Germany and the Netherlands.
A rare meeting between Scotland and Greece
18:15 , Jamie BraidwoodScotland have only played Greece twice, which both came during qualifying for Euro 96, with the Hampden encounter seeing Ally McCoist head the only goal which was enough to secure a place in the finals.
How did Scotland end up in a Nations League play-off?
18:08 , Jamie BraidwoodAfter the disaster of Euro 2024, Scotland lost their first three matches of their Nations League campaign, beaten 3-2 by Poland, 2-1 by Portugal and 2-1 by Croatia.
The scorelines were close, and Steve Clarke insisted that an upturn in results was not far away, and so it proved after Scotland ended their losing run by drawing 0-0 with Portugal.
Scotland then left it late to beat Croatia at Hampden and then almost snuck through to the quarter-finals thanks to Andy Robertson’s 93rd-minute winner in Warsaw.
What is the Scotland team news?
18:03 , Jamie BraidwoodKieran Tierney and Lewis Ferguson return to the Scotland squad after injuries, but Steve Clarke will be without winger Ben Doak and striker Lyndon Dykes.
Motherell’s Lennon Miller, Hearts’ James Wilson and Ipswich’s George Hirst are the new faces in the squad and could all win their first caps.
Craig Gordon, 42, should continue in goal but Tierney’s return could see a return to 3-5-2 in an attempt to get the full-back and Andy Robertson both involved.
Ryan Christie is in great form for Bournemouth and adds to midfield options Billy Gilmour, Scott McTominay, Lewis Ferguson and Kenny McLean. John McGinn could play off Che Adams up front
