BELTON — If you think you have read this before, it's because you have.
Ja'Shaun Lloyd, who owns the fastest high school times in the nation in the 110- and 300-hurdlers dominated the field Thursday in the 5A Area Track Meet in Belton, where he blew by everyone in the 110-hurdles in 13.73 and won the 300-hurdles title in 39.89.
Ja'Shaun led the Tigers to the Regional Meet next week at the University of Texas at Arlington, where the top two in each event will advance to the 5A State Meet in Austin.
Ja'Shaun's twin brother Ty'Shaun won the 100-meter dash in 10:55 and the 200 in 21.47 and both ran on Corsicana's nationally-ranked 4x100 relay team along with younger brother Deonte Lloyd and anchor Jeremiel Taylor that won the Area Meet title in 41.05.
Javon Betts performed exceptionally well in the high jump, clearing 5-10 to finish fifth (based on attempts), just missing a berth in the Regional Meet, and Corbin Branch finished fifth in the long jump. Corsicana's Tigers finished fifth as a team with 64 points, scoring with quality over quantity.
Legendary Tiger Coach Wayne Braziel was proud of his talented group of athletes who took the next step toward Austin.
"I will say we came down and did exactly what we wanted to do, and that was trying to win it or get the top four to advance to the next round," Braziel said. "And with the type of competitors we have we knew they were going to do whatever it took to win! We're proud of them and they have earned and deserve the opportunity to compete next week."
Coach Robert Spencer's girls also scored 64 points in the meet and are sending all three relay teams to the Regional Meet Friday and Saturday at UTA. Measha Rhinehart and Jazmine Newsome run on the 4x100 relay team and the 4x400 relay teams and both are outstanding as individuals.
The 4x100 relay team of Erika Roughton, Newsome, Rhinehart and freshman Jaelyn Watson, the 4x200 relay team of Watson, Roughton, Christi McNutt and Newsome, and 4x400 relay team of Destiny Colon, Newsome, Casandra Hernandez and Rhinehart are headed for UTA.
Newsome finished second in the long jump (18-2.75) and Rhinehart finished second in the triple jump (37-6) and third in the 400 (55.17) to advance as individuals to the Regional Meet, where both have a solid chance to reach Austin as individuals.
Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers have spent the spring with talented athletes rising to new goals every week.
