Fort Hill wins two; Frankfort, Southern, Keyser, Petersburg, Allegany win; Hampshire, Calvary fall
POTOMAC PARK — Fort Hill is 2-0 to begin the season after defeating Southern 4-3 on Friday and Mountain Ridge 9-3 on Saturday at the Hot Stove Complex.
On Saturday, the Sentinels led from the start before pulling away with a six-run bottom of the sixth.
Colt Resh earned the win in relief, throwing two shutout innings and only allowing one hit against four strikeouts.
Bobby Brauer led Fort Hill going 4 of 4 with three stolen bases and a RBI.
Jake Rice added three hits and three RBI while Peyton Blocher and Carson Bender each had a pair of hits.
Bryson Krumpach took the loss for the Miners, throwing 3 2/3 innings and allowing eight hits, two earned runs and no walks with seven strikeouts.
On Friday, it came down to a walk-off from Blocher on a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh,
Brauer was one out shy of going the distance, allowing two hits, one earned run and six walks with seven punch outs.
Brauer led Fort Hill going 3 for 3 with a walk.
Jared Haskiell went five innings for the No. 5 Rams (1-1), allowing four hits, two runs and three walks with nine strikeouts.
Ryan Bird took the loss in 1 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, two runs and a walk.
Bird and Bryson Bennett were the only Rams to record a hit.
The Sentinels host No. 4 Northern (1-0) on Tuesday at the Hot Stove for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
No. 1 Frankfort 3, Washington 2
SHORT GAP, W.Va. — Frankfort scored three runs after the start of the fifth inning to come back and defeat Washington on Saturday.
The Falcons trailed 2-0 before Lanson Orndorf leveled the tally with an RBI double with two outs in the fifth. An inning later, Jesus Perdew recorded the go-ahead knock, an RBI single to right field.
Orndorf then came on in the seventh and retired the side in order for the save.
The Falcons used three arms who all had quality outings. Lane Lease got the start, allowing an unearned run on one hit through three frames. Jaxon Hare tossed the next three innings, allowing a run on one hit to earn the win.
Washington's Brayden Edwards was dealt the loss in relief. Jaxton Earl allowed two unearned runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in 4 2/3 innings of work but was tabbed with a no-decision.
Frankfort hosts Martinsburg on Wednesday.
No. 5 Southern 15, Moorefield 0
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Southern bounced back from Friday's loss with a five-run shutout of Moorefield on Saturday.
The Rams scored in all five innings and put up at least two runs in four of the five.
Brayden Upole earned the win in five innings, allowing one hit and one walk with eight punchouts.
Cade Leader went 3 for 3 with two RBI and a walk.
Southern heads to Mountain Ridge (1-1) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets (0-1) travel to Petersburg (2-0) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Keyser wins pair of road games
NITRO, W.Va. — Keyser played a pair of games on Saturday and won both by a combined margin of 24-3.
The Golden Tornado (3-0) defeated Nitro 8-0 followed by Poca 16-3.
Against Nitro, Keyser scored seven runs in the first.
Lucas Williamson went the distance, allowing four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
Landon Tysinger led the Tornado with two hits, two RBI and a walk while Williamson added a pair of hits and a walk.
Against Poca, Lucas Davy was the standout on both sides.
He went 4 for 4 with six RBI while earning the win on the mound, tossing four innings of one-run ball with four hits, a walk and eight punchouts.
The Golden Tornado head to No. 2 Allegany (1-1) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Petersburg 10, Hampshire 8
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Petersburg led 10-3 after four innings, and despite a late Hampshire rally, held on for a win on Friday.
The Vikings (2-0) scored three runs in the first and third innings before scoring four in the fourth.
The Trojans answered with four runs in the fifth inning and added another in the sixth, but the comeback fell short.
Petersburg's Caden Arbaugh, Payton Metheny and Kaleb Kuhn combined to allow three earned runs with 10 hits and four walks.
Arbaugh, Kaleb Kuhn and Colin Mauzy each had two hits for the Vikings.
Channing Wilt, Cannon Mowery and Mason Wolford each recorded two hits for the Trojans.
No. 2 Allegany 11, Berkeley Springs 0
CUMBERLAND — No. 2 Allegany threw a combined no-hitter in a five-inning shutout of Berkeley Springs on Friday.
Myles Bascelli, Eli Imes and Kane Williams combined for 12 strikeouts against two walks for the Campers (1-0).
Bascelli, Kohen Madden and Cole Ricker each had a pair of hits for Alco.
Madden drove in three RBI while Ricker drove in two.
Lincoln sweeps Hampshire
SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Lincoln swept Hampshire in Saturday's doubleheader, winning game one 11-6 and game two 3-2.
In the second game, the Cougars scored two runs in the first and one in the fifth while the Trojans (0-3) scored one run in the third and seventh innings.
Ethan VanMeter took the loss in six innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs and a walk with five strikeouts.
Channing Wilt led Hampshire going 3 for 4 with two RBI.
In the first game, Lincoln pulled away with a six-run bottom of the sixth.
The Trojans committed five errors that led to three runs for the Cougars.
Wilt, Cannon Mowery and Mason Wolford each had two hits for Hampshire.
Hampshire hosts Hedgesville on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Hancock 12, Calvary 0
HANCOCK — Hancock's Logan Hendershot held Calvary to three hits and two walks, leading the Panthers to a five-inning shutout on Friday.
He only allowed two walks against eight strikeouts.
The Eagles (1-1) used three pitchers who combined to allow 11 hits, nine earned runs and eight walks with three strikeouts.
Hancock had three players with two hits each while Calvary had three players record one hit each.
The Eagles host Shalom on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
