Allegany College splits; Potomac State sweeps; Garrett wins twice
FREDERICK — Allegany College split a doubleheader with nationally ranked Frederick on Tuesday.
The Trojans (11-10, 8-6 NJCAA Region 20) won the second game 1-0 while the Cougars (19-3, 10-2 Region 20) took the first game 10-2.
Frederick is ranked 10th in the latest NJCAA Division II baseball poll.
The second game’s lone run came in the second inning.
Ben Abram singled, setting up Brandon Diaz-Valentin for a RBI knock to drive in Abram.
Frederick had a runner on second in the seventh inning after Cole Swinimer stole second following a single.
Nick Falla forced consecutive flyouts to end the game.
Falla threw a complete game shutout, allowing three hits and two walks with six punchouts.
Ethan Duff took the loss, allowing one earned run in five innings.
In the first game, the Cougars scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Luke Pietrandrea got the win in five innings, allowing three hits, a walk and a run with three strikeouts.
Tyler Serb took the loss in three innings, allowing five hits and two walks.
Of his five runs, only one was earned as the Trojans committed two errors.
The Trojans head to Chesapeake for a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
Potomac State 6-9 Mennonite 0-1
HARRISONBURG, Va. — WVU Potomac State College made quick work of Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, sweeping the doubleheader 6-0 and 9-1.
The Catamounts (8-6) led 7-1 after four innings of the first game.
Four pitchers combined to allow one hit, one run and four walks.
Keyser graduate Evan Jenkins pitched the final two innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced with the lone base runner off a hit by pitch.
Southern graduate Tanner Haskiell and Chris Harbert each recorded a pair of hits for the Catamounts.
In the second game, five of Potomac State’s six runs came across the final three innings.
The Catamounts used three pitchers who combined for two hits and three walks with eight punchouts.
Jordan Canby led Potomac State with three hits, followed by Braden Sload and Ryan Conrad with two each.
The Catamounts host Cecil for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Garrett rolls in South Carolina
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Garrett College has spent the last couple of days in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and is taking advantage.
After Tuesday, the Lakers (11-2) are 4-1 in South Carolina after crushing a pair of opponents on Monday.
Garrett defeated Minnesota North College-Itasca 16-6 and Quinsigamond College 15-2.
Against Itasca, the Lakers scored 11 runs in the third inning.
Mountain Ridge graduate Parker Ferraro pitched the first 2 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and six runs with five strikeouts.
Northern graduate Ethan Sebold took over and threw 1 2/3 scoreless frames.
Jonathan Padgett led Garrett with three hits and three RBI.
Christian Harrington and Brandyn Gonzalez each had two hits.
Harrington added four RBI, followed by Padgett’s three and Noah Broadwater (Keyser) and Wyatt Slocum with two each.
Against Quinsigamond, the Lakers scored at least two runs in five of the six innings.
Lucas Bridger got the win in three innings, allowing one hit, one earned run and two walks with three punchouts.
Karson Reed (Moorefield), Connor Phillips and Adonis Troncoso each threw scoreless innings.
Tristan Kenzevich, Gonzalez and Harrington each had a pair of hits.
Harrington drove in four runs followed by Broadwater (3), Gonzalez (2) and Kenzevich (2).
Garrett defeated Quinsigamond on Tuesday 11-0, but statistics were not posted as of Tuesday evening.
The Lakers conclude their stay in Myrtle Beach with the Apprentice School on Wednesday before heading to Anne Arundel for a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
