Sean McVay suggested the Los Angeles Rams aren’t necessarily in the market for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL draft, saying at the annual league meeting this week that he hasn’t done “a whole lot of work” on the position.
That doesn’t mean the Rams won’t take a signal caller at some point and one option on Day 2 is Jalen Milroe. The Alabama prospect is the best athlete among all quarterbacks in this year’s class, though there are questions about his ability as a pure passer.
If Milroe lands in the right situation, he could develop into a starting quarterback down the line. Former Raiders GM Mike Mayock sees the Rams as a perfect fit for Milroe, giving him a chance to learn from Matthew Stafford for a couple of years.
“Most people around the league think he’s a project, and I don’t disagree. They also think he’s got an exciting skillset, and again, I don’t disagree. I don’t think he’s going to go until the second day, and to me the best place for him to land would be the Los Angeles Rams. They have no second-round pick, but I love the fact they’ve got two thirds, and maybe they can go get this kid,” Mayock said in an interview with Betway.Mayock continued, explaining how Stafford could help Milroe develop as a passer, while also pointing out how Milroe can actually help Stafford, too.
“You get him in L.A. playing behind Matthew Stafford, learning every day, similar to a Green Bay situation with an aging quarterback,” he said. “What a veteran quarterback will do for a rookie is they’ll use him to help them prepare every week. Stafford would go to Milroe and say, ‘I’m going to get all the blitz coverages for the last four weeks, but I want you to go back and pull everything off the tape, and if there’s anything different, I want to see you edit it and present it to me in two days.’ Veteran quarterbacks look at young guys as another opportunity to help them prepare every week, but in doing so it helps the young quarterback learn.”
Mayock believes that if Milroe lands with the Rams and is afforded the time to get better, he could have “a real chance to develop.”“If Milroe goes to the Rams and plays behind Stafford with Sean McVay, who’s one of the best couple of play callers out there, with that offensive staff, I think he’d have a real chance to develop,” he said.
Milroe is projected to go in the second round, potentially slipping into the third. Last season at Alabama, he threw for 2,844 yards and 16 touchdowns with 11 interceptions after throwing 23 touchdown passes and only six interceptions the year prior. His rushing numbers were off the charts in 2024, gaining 726 yards with 20 touchdowns on the ground.
McVay tends to like backup quarterbacks with some mobility, a box Milroe checks with flying colors, so perhaps Los Angeles will consider taking a chance on him.
