Sunday afternoon marked the third straight SEC series loss for Texas A&M after falling 10-5 in a time-restricted game against Kentucky.
Just as it seemed Texas A&M baseball was hitting its stride in SEC conference play, pitching inconsistencies once again became a stumbling block. The Aggies' weekend series against the Kentucky Wildcats revealed glaring issues on the mound that undermined any momentum gained from their thrilling Game 1 comeback win.
The Aggies have shown progress overall, but this series highlighted the urgency of addressing pitching depth. Injuries to key bullpen arms, including Josh Stewart and Shane Sdao, have left Coach Michael Earley in a tough spot, with relievers like Clayton Freshcorn struggling to deliver consistently. Despite Freshcorn's repeated appearances, he has yet to find his rhythm, leaving fans and analysts questioning some coaching decisions.
The bullpen's bind has been a major factor in the Aggies' inconsistency, forcing reliance on arms that haven't stepped up as needed. This past weekend was particularly challenging, with too many free passes and missed opportunities on the mound. Coach Earley acknowledged the struggles, emphasizing the importance of cleaner, more consistent performances going forward.
"Just too many free passes and you not necessarily the walks from the starting pitching but just from hitting guys and give them free bases. A free base is a free base whether it's a walk an error or a hit by pitch."
At this point, with the postseason looking increasingly unlikely, their only goal should be to focus on putting together a few consecutive wins.
Below, you can watch Michael Earley speak after the game.
Texas A&M will host UIW on Tuesday, April 1, at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game will stream on SEC Network+.
