A promising 2025 Texas A&M baseball team quickly has spiraled to a 1-8 conference record under new head coach Michael Earley, causing plenty of concern in Aggieland.
The hiring of Earley as Texas A&M’s head coach has ignited a debate among fans. Supporters champion his intimate knowledge of the team, commitment to staying with the Aggies, and the strong endorsement of players. On the other hand, critics view the decision to appoint a first-year head coach as risky, equating it to handing the keys of a Lamborghini to a teenager with a learner's permit.
As the season unfolds, the critics seem to have a point, with social media filled with "I told you so's." Earley has struggled to piece together complete performances in SEC conference games. Even in the Aggies' lone win against Kentucky, standout pitcher Ryan Prager faced challenges, forcing the team to play catch-up. Early season woes also stemmed from poor offensive approaches, leading to frequent strikeouts and hitting directly into defensive shifts.
Fans have raised concerns about the team's hitting struggles, questioning why Earley, once the hitting coach, is unable to resolve these issues. The answer lies in his transition to head coach, where his focus has shifted away from hitting. As D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers noted, while Earley previously managed hitting, Jim Schlossnagle was responsible for running the offense. Despite the setbacks, fans anticipated a learning curve for Earley and have shown patience as he navigates injuries to key players.

Right now, A&M is 14-15 with only one SEC win, and coach Earley's buyout is only $3 million. Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts could move on from Earley relatively cheaply and would probably get little pushback from the fan base. However, there is also something to be said about hiring a coach who truly wants to be a part of the Aggie family, and he embodies that to the fullest.
With the significant investments pouring into college sports, the game has transformed into a business where results are paramount. While there are visible signs of improvement in the Texas A&M baseball team, head coach Michael Earley and his staff must step up their decision-making if they hope to remain in Bryan-College Station next season. Securing key SEC wins in the final stretch of the season is crucial. Otherwise, Texas A&M may find itself searching for its third head baseball coach in just three years.
Texas A&M will host UIW on Tuesday, April 1, at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game will stream on SEC Network+.
