Do the Indianapolis Colts' positional needs align with what the strength of this year's draft class is?
That element is an important one when it comes to when and how the Colts go about addressing those more pressing needs that are out there.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com recently ranked the position groups in this year's class from first--the best--to 11th, or not the best.
What positions rank in the top three?
At the top of Zierlein's list was the edge rusher group, followed by the running backs and the defensive tackle spot.
These are three positions for the Colts, where starting talent isn't a must, but depth is very much a need, and I imagine all three spots are on GM Chris Ballard's radar.
Along the defensive line specifically, the Colts lost Dayo Odeyingbo in free agency. In addition to that, at the defensive end spot, Kwity Paye, Samson Ebukam, and Tyquan Lewis are all free agents in 2026, and after all, the draft is about planning ahead.
At defensive tackle, improved play behind Grover Stewart and DeForest Buckner is a must. Offenses found way too much success last season when those two weren't on the field, and at a heavily rotated position like defensive tackle, sound depth is vital. Hopefully, Neville Gallimore can provide a boost, but that shouldn't be assumed either.
Then, at running back, the addition of Khalil Herbert shouldn't stop the Colts from adding to this position, especially in what is a loaded draft class. This offense could also benefit from having a pass-catching presence at the position.
What about the offensive line, tight end, and linebacker?
Tight end would come in at No. 4 in Zierlein's rankings and is the biggest hole that still exists on the Colts' roster.
Along the offensive line, tackle came in at No. 5, and the interior offensive line is tied for seventh. At the NFL league meetings, Shane Steichen did acknowledge that the Colts are still looking into adding to the offensive line, whether that be through free agency or the draft.
There very much are some unknowns right now up front, specifically, who the starting right guard will be. Perhaps Matt Goncalves can slide over from tackle, but that shouldn't be assumed either. In addition to the starting lineup, depth along the interior and at tackle are needs as well.
Linebacker, meanwhile, came in at No. 9 out of the 11 positions. Both depth and competition--presumably with Jaylon Carlies--for the starting spot next to Zaire Franklin are requirements here. Ideally, the Colts find an added coverage presence at the position.
