Davante Adams recalls one game from 2012 that showed him the type of person Matthew Stafford is

After spending most of his career catching passes from Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams will now have another strong-armed veteran throwing him the football in 2025. As one of the newest members of the Los Angeles Rams, Adams will get the pleasure of playing alongside Matthew Stafford – a quarterback he saw often as an NFC North rival.

Adams is looking forward to being teammates with Stafford, knowing the type of player he is on the field and the person he is off it. When Adams was asked what he appreciates about Stafford’s game, he recalled one specific game in 2012.

It was during Calvin Johnson’s remarkable record-setting season and Adams remembers Stafford going out in an otherwise meaningless Week 16 game and getting Megatron the single-season receiving record. Stafford targeted Johnson 16 times and completed 11 of those passes for 225 yards, helping his all-world wideout make history.

"He doesn't make it any harder than it needs to be out there. He's simple,” Adams said. “Dating back to when Megatron broke the record, I think he needed like 180-something and he went and got him like 220-something. Seeing that and just knowing that in that situation, I don't think they were headed anywhere near the playoffs, but to play in that game, not check out in the last game of the year, know how much that means to 'Megatron' and know how much it means to him to be a part of something like that, it just says the type of person that he is.”

Though Adams has never been on the same team as Stafford, he’s never heard a bad thing about the current Rams and former Lions quarterback.

“Playing each other over the years and crossing paths a few times, I gathered that he was a pretty nice, straightforward guy,” Adams continued. “You never hear anything bad in the media or anything like that. Coming out here and getting a chance to meet with him and talk to him a little bit today just kind of solidified it. I talked to him while I was in Japan as well. He reached out and let me know he was excited about the opportunity. I don't know if he was quite as eager as Sean was, but it was still a good feeling knowing that the quarterback wants you to be there too."

In a radio interview on ESPN LA after signing with the Rams, Adams called Stafford “one of the best to play the game,” also giving that title to his former quarterback Aaron Rodgers. For that reason, picking a team with a proven quarterback was essential during the free agency process.

“That piece was one of the most critical for me,” he said. “I’ve been to a few places since leaving the Packers and my stop in Vegas, it was great. I think it was a fun time and a productive time at each stop but when you start taking into account how important it is that you have a great quarterback on top of a great supporting cast, you don’t really have a contender if you don’t have a quarterback. Having one of the best ones to play the game throw me the ball now after having another one of the best to play the game throw me the ball before, I keep lucking out with these quarterbacks. Excited about this opportunity.”
