Davante Adams had one word to describe Rams HC Sean McVay's recruiting tactics
Davante Adams joined the Los Angeles Rams this offseason on a substantial deal shortly after the New York Jets released him. He will be one of Matthew Stafford's top pass-catching options this season alongside Puka Nacua.
Adams likely had a lot of suitors this offseason, but he picked the Rams as a destination to finish his career because he wanted to return to California and play for a contender. That, and head coach Sean McVay's pursuit of Adams while he was in Japan.
In Adams' own words, McVay was "aggressive" in his recruitment.
“I'll say aggressive, but in all the right ways though," Adams said about McVay. "He sent me a couple highlight tapes of myself narrating. It was kind of [former Las Vegas Raiders head coach] Jon Gruden-esque a little bit. You know how he is with ball so he's breaking down every single clip? The first one was like seven minutes and then he sent another one that was probably another two minutes where he’s just going through everything and talking about it.
"I thought he took that job to be on TV for a minute when I was watching it. It just shows how much ball means to him and how much of a priority I was for him and the rest of the guys here because it’s not just him making those decisions. When you have that from a coach, you're on the free market and you don't see it from anybody else to that level, it means a lot. It felt like I got ganged up a little bit but as long as I'm here, it doesn't matter.”
Adams added that the two had connected a few years ago at the Kentucky Derby, and that McVay mentioned he wanted to "team up" with Adams in the future. So when McVay got that chance, he didn't try to slow-play Adams.
"It's a good feeling just being wanted and knowing what you still can contribute and bring to the game," Adams said. "It's always good when the other side of the organization views you the same way as you view yourself."
Now, Adams will get a chance to build on his legacy in his home state as the Rams compete not just for an NFC West title, but a hopeful return to the Super Bowl.
