Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media Tuesday morning about the players added this offseason and how they will impact the team. One topic of discussion that came up was the addition of Laremy Tunsil and what that would do for offensive tackle Brandon Coleman, who played his rookie season as the team's left tackle.
Dan Quinn says that Brandon Coleman will be moved to the right tackle position and compete against Andrew Wylie during the offseason before deciding to move either player inside to guard, according to Nicki Jhabvala from the Washington Post. Coleman played 775 snaps at left tackle for the Commanders last season, but he also has plenty of experience at guard from his time at TCU. The 2024 3rd round pick allowed nine sacks and 29 pressures last season as a rookie, but also showed a lot of flashes against some of the league's top pass rushers throughout the season, including the sack leader Trey Hendrickson.
For clarification, was told Brandon Coleman and Andrew Wylie will both start the offseason program at right tackle and compete there. Whether one moves inside to guard depends largely on Sam Cosmi's timetable of recovery from a torn ACL.https://t.co/KsIvVwtVwZ

Coleman played 716 total snaps at guard throughout his college career, and 255 of those were at left guard in his final season as he moved around at left tackle as well. Veteran Andrew Wylie restructured his contract this offseason, keeping him on the Commanders for the season after many thought he could be a release candidate to free up more salary cap. Wylie has been the Commanders' starting right tackle for the last two seasons, and 2024 was the better of the two seasons as he fixed his sack issue from 2023, going from nine sacks allowed to not giving up a sack in 2024, according to PFF.
The right tackle competition will be worth watching throughout camp this offseason to see who emerges as the starter and ultimately could be kicked inside to guard. This update could also influence how the Commanders have their draft boards set up, with interior offensive lineman possibly being the higher priority for the draft now, barring a highly regarded offensive tackle falls to them.
