Clinton Prairie boys basketball assistant coaches carry Final Four, NCAA Tourney knowledge
FRANKFORT — This time last year, Bailey Good was a Purdue basketball manager helping coach Matt Painter and the Boilermakers' preparations for No. 16 seed Grambling State in Detroit while maintaining his role as assistant coach at Clinton Prairie under Chad Peckingpaugh.
Good would eventually be a part of Purdue's second team to reach the national title game and the third to reach the Final Four.
"They're very similar," Good said. 'Both guys have a lot of passion for the game, very knowledgeable, very fiery and very competitive. That's what sets them apart."
Waiting for Good on the Clinton Prairie bench was assistant Russ Doyle, who during his playing days was a 6-foot-8 forward at Miami (OH) where his teammate was future five-time NBA champion Ron Harper.
Good and Doyle give Clinton Prairie an advantage of having assistant coaches equipped with basketball knowledge through multiple generations. Both are Clinton Prairie graduates.
Doyle played for the Gophers' 1982 sectional title champions. Good starred at point guard, playing three varsity seasons before graduating in 2019.
Former Rossville Small Schools Journal & Courier Player of the Year Dirk Shaw is another member of the Clinton Prairie row of assistant coaches who each were successful players.
"Dirk has been a tremendous addition to our program," Peckinpaugh said. "He brings a winning mindset and does a great job in helping develop our young players."
All three men are taking part in the deepest playoff run in school's history with Clinton Prairie (24-2) facing Triton (22-4) at noon Saturday in the IHSAA semi-state round at Crawley Center.
"The thing that's bringing them along is their belief in each other and themselves to be successful," Doyle said of Clinton Prairie players.
Peckinpaugh reflected on Doyle and Good who are helping Clinton Prairie prepare for a Triton team feature the state's top-ranked defense
"Not only does (Doyle) know our community and it's history but he's a part of it," Peckinpaugh said. "He has a great knowledge and concept of the game and anytime you have someone like that on your staff you're very blessed."
Good provides Peckinpaugh with a youthful voice and the ability to share concepts he learned under Painter.
"(Good) can relate to kids on a similar dynamic and relate to our kids on a similar level being a young athlete," Peckinpaugh said. "His knowledge is vast, he picks up on stuff very quick. It was an easy addition for me as soon as he was done playing to ask if he wanted to come down and join us."
Clinton Prairie struggled in the first half Saturday against Central Catholic. Leading scorer Jake McGraw was held scoreless but relied on Good's encouraging words while leading the Gophers to the overtime win.
Good had been a teammate of McGraw's older brother, Grant.
"Our families would go on vacations together," McGraw said. "I would look up to him."
