Track and basketball collide with five Athlete of the Week nominees
LAFAYETTE — Track and field season has begun and one Lafayette area boys basketball team remains in the IHSAA playoffs after Clinton Prairie captured its first regional title Saturday.
While most of the action took place in Indiana, an Attica girls wrestler faced top competition and came home a national champion.
One basketball and three track and field athletes and one wrestler comprise the Journal & Courier Athlete of the Week nominees.

Their accomplishments occurred between March 10-15 which comprises of two male and three female candidates. Polls close Thursday at noon.
Nick Curtin - Clinton Prairie
Curtin saved his best for when Clinton Prairie most needed it. The junior forward 28 points in a 58-55 overtime victory over Central Catholic for Clinton Prairie's first IHSAA class A regional title on March 15. Clinton Prarie plays Triton at noon Saturday at Crawley Center with the winner playing the Kouts-Monroe Central winner later that evening at 8 p.m. for the semi-state title.
Kamarion Ayres - McCutcheon
Ayres took first place in the 55-meter hurdles at the Mavericks Hoosier Qualifier Saturday and Hoosier State Relay Trials Thursday at Purdue. Ayres won the Thursday meet in 7.69 seconds and was clocked at 7.81 seconds Saturday.
Amani Byrd - Lafayette Jeff
The defending West Lafayette sectional 100 meters champ Byrd took first place in the 55-meter dash at the Hoosier State Relay Trials in 7:31 seconds.

Taylor Hornbeck - Clinton Prairie
Hornbeck won the 2024 the sectional pole vault title and started this season with a victory at the Hoosier State Relay Trails with a level of 10 feet.

Aubrey Bartkowiak - Attica
Bartkowiak won a USA Folkstyle Wrestling national championship Saturday in West Des Moines, Iowa. Bartkowiak took the 235-pound title with four wins — all by pin fall.
