Rival watch: Real Madrid handed potential boost as Arsenal star suffers worrying injury setback
Real Madrid may have received an unexpected advantage ahead of their Champions League quarter-final clash with Arsenal, as Gunners defender Riccardo Calafiori suffered a concerning knee injury during Italy’s Nations League quarter-final against Germany.
The 22-year-old centre-back, who has been a key figure in Arsenal’s defensive setup, was forced off the pitch at San Siro after experiencing discomfort in his left knee—the same knee he suffered a severe injury to seven years ago.
What happened to Calafiori?
Calafiori’s injury occurred when he slipped awkwardly while adjusting his position to challenge for a loose ball.
His left knee bent unnaturally, prompting immediate pain. Although he initially attempted to continue, he was soon forced to leave the pitch, visibly distressed and covering his face with his shirt in frustration.
This injury will no doubt raise concerns for Arsenal, as they prepare to face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals on April 8.
Given Calafiori’s importance to Mikel Arteta’s backline, his potential absence could significantly weaken the Gunners’ defensive options.

The Italian defender’s knee problems date back to 2018 when he suffered a catastrophic injury while playing for Roma’s youth team in the UEFA Youth League.
Calafiori completely tore all the ligaments, meniscus, and joint capsule in his left knee, keeping him out of action for nearly a year. While he made a full recovery, injuries of such severity can often lead to long-term complications.
Now, with fresh concerns over the same knee, the Italian national team’s medical staff will conduct further tests to determine the extent of the damage.
Initial reports suggest he could miss the return leg in Germany, although the full diagnosis is still pending.
Speaking about the injury, Italy manager Luciano Spalletti remained cautious:
“We don’t know yet. He has a strange feeling in his knee, but I can’t answer the question of what he feels.”
What this means for Real Madrid
With Arsenal facing a crucial Champions League tie against Los Blancos, Calafiori’s potential absence could disrupt Arteta’s defensive plans.
For Real Madrid, this could be a welcomed boost, as they look to exploit any defensive weaknesses in their pursuit of European glory.
With Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappe Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo leading the attack, a depleted Arsenal defence could struggle to contain Madrid’s firepower.
