Arsenal could receive huge £100m boost next month ahead of summer transfer window
Arsenal will earn £100 million in prize money and bonuses if they beat Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in April, according to The Times.
The Gunners last reached the semi-finals of the elite European competition in 2009 and manager Mikel Arteta and his men will be desperate to even go one better and make their first final since 2006.
UEFA’s new distribution model means Arsenal will pocket £100m if they dump Madrid out of the Champions League next month, which would help boost their coffers ahead of the summer transfer window.
The revenue distribution system for clubs participating in the competition has been changed this season, ensuring there are more financial rewards for performance rather than for historical success.
Arsenal have made around £87m so far after progressing through the league phase and round of 16, and going all the way and winning it would fetch them around £135m.
The North London club could do with such a massive financial boost as they need to bolster their squad ahead of next season.
They remain in the title race this term despite being 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool after 29 games, but catching up with the Reds over the next nine games could prove tricky.
Arsenal need to further strengthen their squad depth in attack after key injuries derailed their domestic campaign, and their Champions League earning will come in handy in the transfer window.
Bukayo Saka is expected to be available to face defending champions Madrid in a huge boost for the Gunners having been out of action since last December, and advancing to the semis will boost their morale and make them believe winning the Champions League is possible.
Arsenal have been wondering for a while if they would have to sell an established star to help fund purchases in the transfer market, but going far in Europe could help prevent that, and Arteta will be hoping his men can get the job done next month.
