Cardinals close out southern trip with one-sided win
PLATTSBURGH — This was more like it.
The Plattsburgh State baseball team jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage on Wednesday afternoon and put the game away with a seven-run fifth on the way to a 15-1 victory over Knox College.
The Cardinals ended their trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a 3-5 record and now stand at 5-5 overall.
Plattsburgh averaged just two runs in its first seven games in Florida before getting the bats going on Wednesday.
“This was the best we’ve hit since our first day here,” Plattsburgh head coach Sam Quinn-Loeb said. “Some of our hitters are feeling good now and hopefully we can take that into the Oneonta series.
“It was a little frustrating. In our second game against DePauw, we did enough offensively to win. Bowdoin is undefeated and a good team. We were right with them, but couldn’t hit. Hopefully, this is behind us now.”
There were positives on the trip.
“Our defense is playing really well,” Quinn-Loeb said. “Our fielding statistics are at .980 and that is above average.
“We also pitched well on the break, with one game getting away from us because of walks.”
The Cardinals allowed 27 runs in eight games in Florida, which comes out to just 3.38 a game. That should be enough to win a lot of games.
Against Knox, Joey DiRocco led the way with a double, two singles and two RBI. Josh Foglia and T.J. Beninati added two hits each, with Foglia driving in two runs.
Plattsburgh had an opportunity to get a lot of players in the game and 10 in all got at least a hit.
The Cardinals used four pitchers with conference starters Kaelen Clarkson going the first inning and Kolby Mordecki the second.
“It was a bullpen day for our starters and they each got an inning in,” Quinn-Loeb said.
Bostyn Duquette went 3.1 innings in relief for the Cardinals as he allowed two hits, walked two, allowed one run and struck out three.
ONEONTA UP NEXT
The Cardinals returned north yesterday and the games will take on added meaning now with a three-game SUNYAC series set for today and Saturday at Oneonta.
Today’s single contest starts at 3 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader begins at noon. All three games are nine innings.
“Oneonta is always competitive,” Quinn-Loeb said. “They have three decent conference starters, and they are a pretty good offensive team. If we hit to our potential, however, we will be fine.”
Oneonta is 7-5 overall thus far and has won three games in a row. Both the Red Dragons and Cardinals will be out to begin their conference season on a good note.
