Caledonia finishes with loss in high-scoring third-place game
Mar. 22—ST. PAUL — No. 4 seed Caledonia ran into an offensive juggernaut Saturday in the Class 2A boys basketball state tournament third-place game, falling 98-79 to No. 3 Breck at Concordia University St. Paul's Gangelhoff Center.
Breck sizzled from the field, hitting 33 of 63 shots en route to its big offensive outing. Miles Newton led the way, scoring 30 points as he went 10-for-18 from the field, including 4-for-9 on 3-pointers. The 6-foot-5 senior guard also collected 12 rebounds. Mu Muhammad added 26 points for the Mustangs on 10-for-14 shooting.
Caledonia also had some huge offensive outputs. Six-foot-4 senior Ethan Stendel led the way with 29 points. Reid Klug, a 6-6 senior, added 26 points. Those two combined to hit 20 of 32 shots. Klug also made 8 of 12 free throws.
Breck (21-11) took over the game early and led 56-35 at halftime. Caledonia outscored the Mustangs 44-42 after intermission.
The loss finished the Warriors' season at 29-4 overall.
Caledonia had some trouble with turnover against Breck, committing 17 of them. Breck turned it over just five times.
Caledonia was a senior-heavy team with eight of them on the roster.
