Boston Celtics sign former Alabama basketball player to standard two-year NBA contract

As the Boston Celtics look to begin their quest to capture a second straight NBA championship, they'll have a former Alabama basketball player on their postseason roster.

Boston announced Sunday that they were converting the contract of guard JD Davison, the 2025 G League MVP with the Maine Celtics, to the standard two-year NBA contract. Davison will be eligible to play in the NBA playoffs, unlike players on two-way contracts.

Davison played in Sunday's 93-86 Celtics win over the Charlotte Hornets at TD Garden to close the 2024-25 regular season. He had nine points on 4-of-11 shooting in 17 minutes.

At 61-21, Boston is the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference behind the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Celtics will face the winner of the play-in game between the Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic in the first round of the playoffs.

Davison was named G League MVP on April 2. He averaged 25.1 points, 7.6 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals a night in 45 games with the Maine Celtics. Boston drafted Davison in the second round with the 53rd overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft after one season at Alabama.

As a freshman with the Crimson Tide on Nate Oats' 2021-22 team, the two-time Alabama Mr. Basketball award winner averaged 25.8 minutes a night and 8.5 points to go with 4.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds. Davison earned SEC All-Freshman honors that season.

A consensus five-star recruit out of Calhoun School in Letohatchee in the class of 2021, On3 ranked Davison as the No. 11 player nationally in that year's recruiting class and the No. 2 overall point guard.
