Embry-Riddle loses to Nova Southeastern in NCAA DII women's basketball tournament
The best season in Embry-Riddle women’s basketball history ended Saturday.
In the South Region semifinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament, the Eagles fell to rival Nova Southeastern 66-63 in Jackson, Tennessee. It was the second time the teams had squared off against each other in the last six days, with Embry-Riddle capturing a win and the program's first Sunshine State Conference Tournament crown last Sunday.
The Eagles closed with a 27-5 record. Their win total surpassed their previous record of 24 set in 2017-18.
This week marked their third NCAA Tournament appearance and second time advancing to the second round.
“I am so proud of what they accomplished this year,” coach Lisa Wilson said. “Our seniors did a great job growing our program, and we will miss them very much. Everyone wants to win their last game, and we came up just a few points short. This was a special group and a special season.”
Embry-Riddle battled the Sharks four times this year, going 2-2. Each showdown was decided by no more than five points.
Saturday was no different.
In the first quarter, Nova Southeastern assembled the first run of the game (7-0) to jump ahead 16-9. But ERAU’s Jenna Teterycz hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 16-12 heading into the second.
There, the Eagles outscored the Sharks 20-12. Laurie Satchell converted a layup with three minutes left in the half to give Embry-Riddle its first lead of the period. It maintained it until the break, entering the locker room with a 32-27 advantage.
The Eagles remained in front for the entire third quarter.
Nova Southeastern kicked off the fourth with a 10-0 run, grabbing its first lead of the half (56-54) with four minutes to go.
With just under three minutes left, Satchell put in another layup to wrestle the advantage back for Embry-Riddle 59-58. It lasted only one possession, though.
The Sharks dribbled down the court, and after missing their first shot, Payton Graber tipped the ball back up and in for a 60-59 lead. They held on afterward.
Nova Southeastern recorded six points to the Eagles’ four in the final two minutes.
“They just executed a little better down the stretch,” Wilson said.
Graber paced the Sharks with 15 points.
Madyson Jean-Louis posted a game-high 18 points for Embry-Riddle. Satchell had 17.
The Eagles shot better from the field than Nova Southeastern (44% to 41%) but turned the ball over 19 times to the Sharks’ 11.
