Here are some Wisconsin connections in the women's NCAA basketball tournament
The NCAA women's basketball tournament has set its brackets, and there are plenty of Wisconsin-connected athletes to know. Here's the rundown:
Starters for women's basketball tournament
Everyone on UW-Green Bay
Once again, the UW-Green Bay Phoenix will bring a roster loaded with Wisconsinites into the Big Dance. Those players include:
- Natalie McNeal (Germantown). She was named first-team all-conference in the Horizon League for a second straight year, averaging a career-best 14.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, plus 2.1 assists.
- Maddy Schreiber (Kimberly). After being named second-team all-conference last year, she garnered a first-team nod this time around, posting 12.7 points per game and 3.6 rebounds, even though she's been coming off the bench since the calendar turned to 2025.
- Bailey Butler (Black Hawk). The Horizon League defensive player of the year also leads the conference with 4.8 assists per game.
- Callie Genke (Freedom). She scores 8.8 points per game.
- Jasmine Kondrakiewicz (Milwaukee Pius). The 6-foot-1 senior hauls in 6.8 rebounds per game and 8.6 points, and she earned a spot on the all-defensive team.
- Cassie Schiltz (Luxemburg-Casco). She started every game this year for the Phoenix and averages 8.4 points per game.
Mesa Byom (Melrose-Mindoro), South Dakota State
Byom scores 6.7 points with 6.8 rebounds and earned a spot on her conference's all-defense team after the Jackrabbits went undefeated in the Summit League this season.
Lexi Donarski (La Crosse Aquinas), North Carolina
She averaged 10.6 points per game in her second season at North Carolina, starting every game and also adding 1.4 assists per contest with a 40% mark from 3-point range. Donarski played three seasons at Iowa State before arriving in Chapel Hill.
Maty Wilke (Beaver Dam), Utah
The former Wisconsin player is in her second year with the Utes, scoring 9.3 points per game off the bench with 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals.
Iyana Moore (Milwaukee born), Vanderbilt
She played high school basketball in Tennessee but considers Milwaukee her hometown; she scores 12.6 points per game with 2.5 assists.
Other Wisconsin-tied players in women's basketball tournament
- KK Arnold (Germantown), Connecticut. She comes off the bench after starting most games last year, and she's averaging 5.5 points and 2.8 assists per game for the Big East champion.
- Lily Hansford (Appleton East), Iowa State. After reaching the NCAA tournament with Oregon State last year, she's seen the floor in 31 games for the Cyclones this year.
- Luci Jensen (Brookfield Academy), Notre Dame. The freshman has seen the floor in eight games this year.
- Leilani Kapinus (Madison Memorial), Vanderbilt. The transfer from Penn State has appeared in 31 games this year for the Commodores, averaging 4.1 points per game.
- Sarah Lazar (Madison Edgewood), Vermont. The 6-3 forward has seen action in 28 games.
- Teagan Mallegni (McFarland), Iowa. The freshman averages 3.2 points and 8.8 minutes per game with the Hawkeyes.
- Khamya McNeal (Shorewood, Milwaukee King), George Mason. McNeal comes off the bench and averages 6.9 minutes per game for the Atlantic 10 champion.
- Anna Mortag (Brookfield Central), Florida Gulf Coast. She transferred from Butler but has not seen the floor this year for the Atlantic Sun champion.
- Ashala Moseberry (Madison East), West Virginia. She's appeared in seven games for the Mountaineers.
- Julia Ouimette (Lakeland Union), UW-Green Bay. Redshirt freshman did not see the floor this year.
- Meghan Schultz (New Berlin West), UW-Green Bay. Center appeared in 22 games this year.
- Taylor Stremlow (Verona), Iowa. She averages 2.1 points per game and has played in every game for the Hawkeyes this year.
- Allie Ziebell (Neenah), Connecticut. The freshman averages 8.6 minutes and 3.1 points per game for the Big East champion.
Coaches with Wisconsin ties
Nicki Collen, Baylor
The former standout at Platteville High School, nee Taggart, also transferred from Purdue to Marquette and led the Golden Eagles to the NCAA tournament in two seasons. She's in her fourth season at Baylor and has spent time as a head coach in the WNBA, earning the league's coach of the year award with Atlanta.
Kayla Karius, UW-Green Bay
Formerly Kayla Tetschlag, the first-year head coach is one of the most decorated players in UWGB history, a former league player of the year and two-time first-team pick in the Horizon League. She also just signed a two-year extension after her team qualified for the Big Dance by winning the Horizon League tournament. Her staff includes longtime UWGB assistant Sarah Bronk, former UW-Stevens Point player, Wisconsin assistant and WIAA assistant director Kate Peterson-Abiad, plus Watertown native Liz Oswald and former Hortonville High School standout Shay Frederick.
Assistant coaches with Wisconsin ties
- Gregg Gottlieb, San Diego State. His father, Bob, was head coach at UW-Milwaukee and his brother, Doug, is the current head coach at UW-Green Bay.
- Kayla Kleifgen, Murray State. She served as an assistant at Marquette last season.
- Justine Raterman, Michigan. She's been an assistant in past five seasons at Marquette under Megan Duffy.
- Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton, Texas. The third-year assistant coach and recruiting coordinator spent two years at the University of Wisconsin.
