Bengals: Popular free agent was 'never a realistic option'
The Cincinnati Bengals were never in the sweepstakes for free-agent guard Teven Jenkins, it seems.
While one report suggested the Bengals had expressed interest in Jenkins, The Athletic's Paul Dehner Jr. added his own reporting on Monday to the topic:
"Teven Jenkins is a name out there in recent days, but was never a realistic option for the Bengals. There’s a reason the former Bears guard wasn’t scooped up early in free agency and reportedly is taking a visit to Seattle on Monday in a league where players rarely take visits anymore. New Bears coach Ben Johnson seemed to speak loudly with the investment and resources given to immediately replace Jenkins (and other interior linemen) in Chicago and the rest of the league seemed to agree. The Bengals are among them. They aren’t pursuing him."
Much can go into the reasonings behind a report like this. But the fact Jenkins wasn't a Wave 1 free agent and guys like Mekhi Becton are now coming off the board for desperate teams like the Los Angeles Chargers says much. Now, a Friday report about a Monday visit has, so far, yet to produce traction on a signing.
Whether Jenkins and his reps want too much is among many of the factors worth questioning. But the Bengals bowing out or never really entering his market does not mean the team won't add somebody else at the position.
Right now, the most common talking point centers on veteran guard Brandon Scherff, which would make a lot of sense.
On paper, it's reasonable to expect the Bengals still add a veteran guard in free agency and then attack the position in the first three rounds of the draft, if not in the first outright. But the Jenkins idea, it seems, was never more than a brief consideration.
