Bengals accused of getting it wrong with Chase, Higgins extensions
Not everyone is a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals locking down star receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins on contract extensions.
Despite the move being what Joe Burrow publicly (and privately) asked for, there are those who have suggested the team could have used cap space in a different manner.
Take, for example, Nick Wright, who went on FS1's "First Things First" and criticized the move.
“I don’t think this is the best path forward for them to win a championship," Wright said. "And I think it also operates as if Joe Burrow is not a great quarterback…I don't think he needs the best receiver duo in the league.”
Wright suggests the Bengals are following the Miami Dolphins model of paying two superstar wideouts, which hasn't worked. He also invokes the name of Peyton Manning, but notes that those old Colts teams also had two Trey Hendrickson-level players, not one.
This sort of criticism, though, will have Bengals fans feeling some whiplash. It wasn't all that long ago that the team was accused of being "cheap" if they didn't pay their top guys, either.
The goalposts have moved now and all the Bengals can do is draft well and hope they're correct in guessing that one coordinator change can revive and almost identical defense from a season ago.
