ADM track gets strong preview runs ahead of early bird meet
The Tigers will get officially started with the track and field season on March 27 with their annual coed early bird meet. But before the year’s first outdoor meet, ADM went to action inside to get a feel of their potential.
Boys
With over 30 teams from Class 3A attending the IATC Indoor Championships, the Tigers were among the top shelf programs on March 13. With 52 points, they were a sneeze away from an early season title, only falling behind Pella (57) and Algona (55) to claim third place.
In all four sprint events, the Tigers scored inside the top eight, getting the biggest boost from Cameron Forgy in the 400-meter dash as the runner-up with 51.43 seconds in a dead heat with two other runners around him. He’s just getting warmed up, having clocked 50.59 seconds last season as a junior.
Also in second place, the 4x400 relay team with Forgy along with Brayden Rynearson, Brayden Davison and Parker Hook, the Tigers finished in 3:29. While that exact combo didn’t run as a group last season, they all were on a relay that finished under 3:28 last season, leaving potential to climb closer to the 3:23 group that Rynearson was part of.
The Tigers also got some confidence out of long-jumper Corbin Reed with a distance of 19-feet-10. That would have placed inside the top 20 at last year’s state meet.
Girls
After winning a team state title in 2024, the Tigers kicked off the new year with a couple of indoor meets, wrapped up with fourth place in the IATC Indoor Championships among the 30-odd Class 3A teams that made the trip to Ames.
That preliminary event marked who the Tigers might be competing with at the end of May to defend their title.
North Polk and Pella each tied at the top with 54 points, followed by Marion’s 46 points and ADM holding 43 points in a meet with half of the events in a full championship meet.
Giving the largest bump, the Tigers had a pair of long-jumpers placed in the top-five: juniors Aniston Tollari and Calli Seehase placing fourth and fifth, respectively. At 16-feet-5 and 16-1, the two are starting to inch toward their best marks from their sophomore seasons.
A few days earlier, the team also loaded up for the A.D. Dickinson Relays at the UNI-Dome where the Tigers had more opportunity to see their sprinting potential.
Jada Grove made it to the final heat of the 60-meter dash where she placed ninth at 8.06 seconds. Her time of 27.43 seconds in the 200 dash placed 11th among the statewide selection with over 200 other runners. She peaked at 26.33 last season, a time she’ll be climbing to beat as a senior looking for another state meet appearance.
Likewise, Elise Coghlan was a finalist in the 60-meter hurdles and placed 10th with a time of 9.53 seconds, closely followed by Josi Dufoe as a top-20 finisher in the prelims.
