Lynnville-Sully's Deal leaps his way to second at Iowa State indoor
Mar. 18—AMES — The Lynnville-Sully boys track and field team went to the IATC Indoor Champioships on Friday and came home with times and distances that already matched what they did last season.
The Hawks, led by a quartet of top-10 tallies, came home with 16.5 points and finished 13th in the Class 1A standings.
Connor Deal was part of the team's two top-five finishes and Lynnville-Sully was seventh in the 4x800-meter relay.
Terran Gosselink
That 4x800 team was the same foursome who ran in the event last year and placed 10th. This year, Hendrick Lowry, Terran Gosselink, Colton Alberts and Blake Wilmesmeier finished seventh in 9 minutes, 17.02 seconds, which was 19 seconds faster than last year's time.
Lowry also was 15th in the 800. He posted a time of 2:18.05.
"That's a great start to the season," L-S head boys track and field coach Darin Arkema said.
The top finish and top event for the Hawks was the high jump. Deal led the way in second with a personal-best leap of 6 feet, 1 inch. Gosselink tied for sixth with a jump of 5-9.
Deal cleared the bar at 5-11 and 6-1 on his third and final attempt.
"The high jump was a strong event all last year for (Deal) and (Gosselink) and they picked up right away this season with great starts," Arkema said.
Hendrick Lowry
The shuttle hurdle relay team placed fifth. The foursome of Deal, Gosselink, Michael Spooner and Sawyer Veldhuizen posted a time of 36.47 seconds.
The Hawks' 4x100 relay team placed 12th. The group of Jaiden Richards, Ethan Dunsbergen, Jace Johnson and Spooner finished in 47.11.
The 300-meter track makes the event more challenging.
"For the most part we had decent handoffs for the first run of the season and certainly with more practice on the handoffs and conditioning through training, we can take that time down," Arkema said.
ACGC won the 1A boys meet title with 59.5 points. Oakland Riverside (44), South Hamilton (43), Iowa Valley (32) and Columbus Catholic (31) completed the top five.
Tatum Huyser
Huyser leads L-S girls at Iowa State indoor
Tatum Huyser posted two top-seven finishes and the Lynnville-Sully girls registered three in its four total events during the IATC Indoor Championships on Friday.
The Hawks wound up in the top 10 in the 4x800 and took 13th in the 4x400, which helped them score seven points and finish 25th in the Class 1A girls division.
"It was a good day of competing for these events and individuals," Lynnville-Sully head girls track and field coach Kevin Johnson said. "They ran hard and did a nice job."
Olivia Norrish
Huyser led the Hawks with a fifth-place finish in the 60 dash. She qualified for the finals with a time of 8.25 seconds and then ran 8.27 in the finals.
She also competed in the 200 and placed seventh with a time of 27.45.
"It was a good day for Huyser, placing in both events and getting a medal," Johnson said.
The 4x800 relay team was eighth. The foursome of Emma Parkinson, Olivia Norrish, Breah Lowry and Peyton Sharp posted a time of 11:03.97.
The final event was the 4x400 relay. The group of Brilynn Tice, Isabelle Vos, Lowry and Sharp took 13th in 4:33.68.
Council Bluffs St. Albert (44) edged Saint Ansgar (43) for the 1A girls meet title. Danville (34), Madrid (31) and West Bend Mallard (29) completed the top five.
