Bears HC Ben Johnson discusses importance of slot receiver in his offense

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson was brought to the organization considered one of, if not the best, offensive minds in the NFL.

In his three seasons as Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, Johnson led the charge with the resurgence of quarterback Jared Goff, a dynamic running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, and developing Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta into All-Pro players at their positions.

Now in Chicago, Johnson will look to take quarterback Caleb Williams' game to the next level, while building a playmaking system around him led by superstar wide receiver DJ Moore.

When speaking with the media this week at NFL Owners Meetings, Johnson spoke about the slot wide receiver position, how it was one of the most productive positions during his time in Detroit, and if he'd like his best offensive player in that position.

"I think that's to be determined, it's a little bit different right now," Johnson said. "Can DJ (Moore) play inside? I think he can, can Rome (Odunze) play inside? I think he can. Both those guys showed those traits last year on tape, to what degree? I don't know yet, we have to hit the grass and see what they're really capable of and what they do well. I feel really good about the two guys we brought in free agency and what they bring to the table."

Adding veterans Olamide Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay to their wide receiver room this offseason, the Bears have built depth behind Moore and Odunze, giving their new head coach plenty of options in the new look offense. The slot position could be key to the passing game offense for Caleb Williams, and that could take Moore, Odunze, or anyone else's game to the next level.
