Barcelona’s €18m-rated versatile star eyes starting spot amidst injury crisis

Eric Garcia might not be a guaranteed starter under Hansi Flick, but his tactical flexibility ensures that he remains an important asset for Barcelona this season.

With injuries affecting key players and an international break creating selection challenges, the Spanish defender could see increased playing time in the coming matches.

So far this season, Garcia has featured in 28 matches across all competitions but has only been named in the starting XI 10 times.

Despite this, he continues to be a reliable squad player, offering solutions in multiple positions when required.

Now, with Marc Casado and Inigo Martinez both sidelined, the defender has a golden opportunity to push for a starting role in the next few fixtures.

Versatility as his biggest strength

One of Garcia’s standout qualities is his ability to operate in multiple positions. With Martinez out, he becomes a natural option at centre-back, while Casado’s absence means he could also be considered for a role in defensive midfield.

Another key advantage is the international break, as Garcia will stay behind while many of Barcelona’s key defenders are away with their national teams.

This gives him more time to train under Flick, potentially increasing his chances of featuring in upcoming games.

A likely starter against Osasuna?

With Ronald Araujo away with Uruguay and expected to return late from international duty, and Pau Cubarsi also currently with Spain, Garcia could be first in line to start against Osasuna.

The last time he partnered with Cubarsi at centre-back was in Barcelona’s 2-0 victory against Las Palmas, where they delivered a solid defensive display.

Given Flick’s need for a stable backline, Garcia might have another chance to prove himself in that role.

While competition for places in Barcelona’s squad is intense, Garcia’s ability to adapt makes him an invaluable squad player.

His experience, composure on the ball, and positional awareness could be crucial for Flick in managing fixture congestion and injuries.
