Barcelona boss Hansi Flick the latest to speak out on Julián Alvarez’s disallowed penalty
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has added his name to the long list of those to have provided their takes on the controversy stemming from this week’s Madrid Derby.
Real and Atlético Madrid of course locked horns on the continent on Wednesday night, in the 2nd leg of the Champions League Last-16 tie between the clubs.
When all was said and done, it was the former who marched on to the quarter-finals, courtesy of a penalty shootout triumph.
As much, though, came amid altogether controversial circumstances.
In the thick of the shootout, with Atlético brimming with confidence after seeing frontman Julián Alvarez find the roof of the net, suddenly, a VAR check was sparked.
This came after it was noted that Alvarez may have touched the ball with both feet en route to slotting home.
It was ultimately concluded that this had indeed proven the case, with the spot-kick therefore chalked off, opening the door for Real Madrid to take advantage.
Widespread discussion has since surrounded the matter, amid widely contrasting views on how exactly the situation should have been handled.
And as alluded to above, on Saturday, drawn on the subject in a public setting for the first time was Barcelona headmaster Hansi Flick.
Speaking during his press conference ahead of tomorrow’s La Liga showdown with none other than Atlético, Flick explained:
“Alvarez’s penalty? Pfffff, what do you want me to say? It was very unfortunate. I felt bad for him because he’s a fantastic player, one of the best forwards. I have nothing to comment on because it wasn’t my decision. I saw it, and I feel sorry for him.”
