Hansi Flick approves Barcelona veteran’s renewal, final decision now up to player
Wojciech Szczesny has been a major hit at FC Barcelona. Having been brought in as an emergency signing after Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury, the 34-year-old had to wait until January for his debut but has not looked back since then.
Szczesny replaced Inaki Pena as Hansi Flick’s preferred option between the sticks and has repaid the faith shown in him by the manager with impressive performances – with the best of the lot coming against Benfica in the Champions League Round-of-16 first leg.
Flick approves Szczesny’s renewal
Given his rise in stature, talks of Barcelona extending Wojciech Szczesny’s contract have been doing the rounds for some weeks now.
Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, Szczesny’s continuity at Barcelona is moving closer to becoming a reality.
Manager Hansi Flick is fully satisfied with the Polish goalkeeper’s performances and has already given his approval for a contract extension beyond June 30, 2025.
Barça sporting director Deco is also in favour of keeping Szczesny at the club but was waiting for Flick’s input before proceeding. Now, the only thing missing is the goalkeeper’s final decision.
Szczesny prefers to wait until end of season
The report adds that Szczesny has not ruled out extending his stay at Barcelona. However, he prefers to wait until the end of the season before making a commitment.
In a recent interview, he expressed his openness to staying, as he said: “My family is happy, my son loves his school, my wife loves being here… I’m open to everything.”
“If you asked me at the start of the season, I’d say I’ll be leaving Barça in June. But I love the time I‘ve spent here…,” he added.
Szczesny, who will turn 35 on April 18, has yet to lose a single game with Barcelona, keeping 15 clean sheets in as many matches in all competitions.
