Barcelona midfielder Gavi was once again the standout performer against Real Betis, earning the Man of the Match award after netting Barça’s only goal of the evening.
It was the second time this season the youngster had scored against Betis, having already found the net in the Copa del Rey.
His early strike, coming before the 10th minute, set the tone for what could have been a celebratory evening. However, the match ended 1-1, and for Gavi, personal accolades meant little compared to the frustration of another missed opportunity.
Speaking after the game, Gavi was quick to express disappointment, despite his strong showing and full 90-minute display.
“With a win, we’d have gone further ahead,” he said, referring to Real Madrid’s defeat to Valencia.
“In the end, it’s football, and we had chances we didn’t know how to take advantage of. We’re leaving with a bitter draw,” he said.
Mistakes that could have been avoided
The midfielder also reflected on the goal Barcelona conceded, which came from a set piece—an area where Barça had previously shown strength all season.
“We knew it. We’ve been very good from set pieces all season, and today they scored against us in a way that I think was avoidable. These things happen, and we have to improve on that.”
Despite the controversy surrounding the refereeing in the final minutes—particularly the decision not to allow a final corner kick—Gavi chose not to fan the flames.
“Ultimately, it’s the referee’s decisions; we can’t interfere there, and whatever they call, that’s what it will be,” he said diplomatically, avoiding adding fuel to the fire.
Lastly, when asked about the warm embrace he shared with manager Hansi Flick after his goal, Gavi revealed the depth of trust he feels within the squad.
“I know the trust the manager and my teammates have in me. I don’t care what people say, and I feel very confident in the team. I’m very happy,” he added.
