With each passing day, Frenkie de Jong appears to be moving closer to renewing his contract at Barcelona.
The Dutch international has established himself as a key player for Barcelona since the turn of the year and is regarded as a key component in Hansi Flick’s midfield.
In light of his top performances this year, Barcelona are ready to hand him a new contract, with his current deal expiring in 2026.
De Jong ready to reject other clubs
A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered an update on de Jong’s situation, suggesting that the midfielder has already instructed his agent to reject other clubs.
This is quite significant considering the fact that de Jong was not devoid of interest from other clubs across Europe, especially with his contract expiring at the end of next season.
But it appears the former Ajax midfield prodigy is happy at Barcelona and is more than willing to renew his contract at the club.
The report goes on to add that de Jong has no desire to play out his contract at Barcelona and leave the club on a free transfer.
The road, therefore, is clear for Barça and kickstart negotiations and reach an agreement with the Dutch international.
However, this is where things get interesting. It must be noted that de Jong enjoys a relatively high salary at Barcelona, and there is a possibility the club may ask him to lower his salary in exchange for a longer contract.
But whether or not de Jong is willing to make such an arrangement remains to be seen, especially given his fractured relationship with the club bosses.
