Auburn takes giant leap in the rankings after series win over Alabama

After dropping four games in a row leading up to their weekend series with top-10 Alabama last weekend, the Auburn Tigers bounced back in a major way by taking two of three games from the Crimson Tide in front of the home crowd at Plainsman Park.

The series win was crucial as Auburn has gained momentum ahead of a brutal stretch that will see the Tigers play three top-four teams over the next four weeks. Picking up two wins over Alabama also helped them make strides in the rankings.

Auburn advanced five places in the latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll from No. 17 to No. 12 after its series win over the Crimson Tide, who fell from No. 8 to No. 10. Auburn is one of 10 SEC teams in this week's top 25 poll, and one of nine SEC squads residing in the top 15.

This week's top four consists of SEC teams: Arkansas (No. 1), Texas (No. 2), LSU (No. 3), and Tennessee (No. 4). Georgia falls three places to No. 6 after being swept in Austin while Ole Miss and Alabama round out the top 10 at No. 8 and No. 10 respectively. Vanderbilt checks in at No. 14 and Oklahoma holds the No. 19 spot to close out the SEC's representation in this week's ranking.

Auburn will have an eventful week as it will travel to No. 18 Georgia Tech in midweek action before hosting No. 3 LSU for a three-game set beginning Friday.

Here is a look at where Auburn falls in this week's rankings:

  • USA TODAY Coaches Poll: No. 11 (+5)
  • D1Baseball: No. 11 (+5)
  • Baseball America: No. 9 (+6)
