Artistic swimmer and student coach: Vote for azcentral Student of the Week, March 17-21
Student of the Week offers schools the chance to celebrate teens who have placed in an art, dance or music competition, excelled in a science fair, won an essay contest, received a scholarship, were recognized for their volunteer service or have shined in some other way.
All high schools in Arizona are invited to nominate students to be included in an online poll where azcentral.com readers vote to choose the Student of the Week.
Student of the Week voting is open from 6 a.m. Monday through noon Wednesday. The winner is announced online on Friday at 6 a.m.
Meet this week's nominees!
Victoria Ballard, senior, Cesar Chavez High School
I am nominating Victoria Ballard, a second-year student coach, for Student of the Week because of her dedication to helping all students in my adaptive PE class. Victoria has a great attitude, cares for the students and is always going above and beyond in her efforts to keep them active. She can multitask by working with two-to-three students, is efficient with her time and the students love having her as a coach. One of her strengths is flexibility. She thinks quickly on her feet, modifies and adjusts skill levels for participation to meet the students' needs all while creating enjoyable experiences for the students.
Nomination submitted by Tom Eggert, adaptive physical education teacher, Cesar Chavez High School.
Mona Schwickert, sophomore, ASU Prep Digital
At 15, Mona Schwickert of Scottsdale has already spent more hours in the pool than most people do in a lifetime. Mona, an artistic swimmer, hopes to one day compete in the Olympics. She started artistic swimming when she was four, and in 2019, I went to the PanAmerican Championship with the U.S. National Team. She has been to the Youth World Artistic Swimming Championships multiple times, winning gold in one event and bronze in three events. All of the training makes it difficult to attend a traditional school, but Mona keeps up with her studies online through ASU Prep Digital. The NCAA-accredited program allows her to work toward collegiate scholarships, and thanks to dual credit opportunities, she’ll leave high school with a semester or more of college credit.
Nomination submitted by Shasta Schrempp, learning success coach, ASU Prep Digital.
