An answer may be coming in Manchester City’s quest to sign Florian Wirtz
Manchester City will be looking to add creativity to their midfield this summer. It’s an obvious need that must be filled when the world champions continue their rebuild during the upcoming summer transfer window. One player who would improve this area of the pitch for Pep Guardiola’s side is Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz. The German international plays in a similar position to Kevin De Bruyne, although he is a different type of player to De Bruyne. Now a new report indicates that a decision on the future of Florian Wirtz may be imminent. That decision has the potential to shape Manchester City’s summer transfer window.
Florian Plettenberg has reported via X that Bayer Leverkusen has a contract extension prepared for Florian Wirtz. The offer in front of Wirtz will see him extend his contract with the club until 2028. It will also include a release clause that will become active in the summer of 2026 as per Plettenberg’s report. Furthermore, Plettenberg adds that Bayer Leverkusen are expecting a decision from Wirtz soon. Plettenberg further reports that Manchester City and Bayern Munich are hoping to sign Wirtz this summer. Lastly, Plettenberg adds that Leverkusen would demand a transfer fee of between €120-130 million to sell the German international this summer.
The decision Florian Wirtz makes has the potential to shape Manchester City’s summer business.
Based on his performances for both club and country there is no doubt that Florian Wirtz could be the biggest name available in the summer transfer market. He is one of the most sought-after players in the game and has proven his pedigree at Bayer Leverkusen and for Germany. But what he decides to do in regards to his future has the potential to shape Manchester City’s summer transfer window.
If Florian Wirtz extends his contract with Bayern Leverkusen then Manchester City will have to move onto other targets to fill a void in their squad. As mentioned above Wirtz would add what Pep Guardiola’s squad currently lacks. They are screaming out for more creativity in midfield. Wirtz would provide that if Manchester City could sign him in the summer. Signing him would be no easy task. Especially when you consider that Bayern Munich are also lurking with intent to sign the German international. But there is an argument to be made that Florian Wirtz could and should be Manchester City’s number-one transfer target this summer. The sooner a decision is made by Wirtz on his future, the sooner Manchester City will know where to focus their energy in the summer transfer window.
It appears that a decision on the future of Florian Wirtz is imminent. That decision has the potential to shape Manchester City’s summer transfer business. It is now a waiting game to see what Wirtz decides to do regarding extending his contract at Bayer Leverkusen. If he decides to leave Leverkusen this summer, then the race is on to sign him. Manchester City will be in that race based on what they need to add to Pep Guardiola’s squad.
