A reunion with Brandon Staley makes sense for this free agent and the Saints
Asante Samuel Jr. remains on the open market a week into free agency. He's a name that has been thrown around the New Orleans Saints since before the legal tampering period began, due to his connection to Brandon Staley.
Paulson Adebo's future with the Saints was in question. He was a free agent and sustained a season-ending injury last year. Samuel Jr. was viewed as a potential replacement at cornerback.
Adebo signed a contract with the New York Giants early in free agency leaving New Orleans with a vacancy at boundary cornerback. They signed Isaac Yiadom, but that doesn't take another signing off the table. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox sees the Saints as the best fit for Samuel Jr., along with the Washington Commanders.
Knox wrote, "the best fits for Samuel might be teams that could use a coverage specialist and have some familiarity with the player." New Orleans checks both of those boxes.
Samuel played for Staley with the Los Angeles Chargers for the first three years of his career. During each of those years, the cornerback had two interceptions and double digit pass deflections. The mixture of familiarity and production in Staley's scheme makes him a natural fit and a match for the team's needs. It'll benefit Samuel with a quick transition and benefit the Saints by giving them a starting cornerback.
