It pays to have the richest ownership group in the NFL.
The Denver Broncos, owned by the Walton-Penner family, have committed $164,462,500 to nine free agent signings this spring. That ranks seventh in the NFL, according to OverTheCap.com.
The team's $94,727,500 committed in total guarantees ranks eighth in the league and their $91,972,500 in full guarantees ranks sixth. Somewhat surprisingly, the first-year cash payout total of $59,950,000 only ranks 13th in the NFL. If there's any team with cash available, it's Denver.
Greg Penner is now the team's majority owner after Rob Walton transferred part of his ownership stake to his grandchildren in 2023, but Forbes estimates Walton and his family have a net worth of $105.6 billion.
Walton's daughter, Carrie, married Penner, and those three are Denver's primary owners. The Broncos also have three minority owners: Mellody Hobson, Condoleezza Rice and Lewis Hamilton.
Every team in the NFL has the same salary cap limit, but not every club has the resources (and available cash) of Denver's franchise. Last year, the Broncos gave big extensions to four key players, and more in-house deals are likely on the way. Denver's ownership group is also building a new training facility, and a new stadium could soon follow. The Broncos are in good hands.
